YORK, PA
Kevin Varnes (89, above) took a pair of wins in the rain-shortened half mile at the York Fairgrounds. The second annual Action Motorsports/Baer Racing Products/Don's Kawasaki/WD Truck Service-sponsored event has restarted motorcycle racing at the fabled facility, and for the second year, the event was plagued with rain. This year, about a third of the finals were run before a steady light rain made even this all-weather pea gravel/sand course too hazardous for most of the riders to run.
During some of the heats, rain was falling off and on, and with the forecast calling for steady rain between 3 and 5 p.m., the featured 450 Pro final was moved up to first on the schedule. Varnes put his Don's Kawasaki/MRT Racing/Motion Pro Kawasaki into the lead right away, ahead of Cameron Rafferty, Matt Weidman, Brian Phillips and Shawn Baer. Baer started moving, taking fourth on the second lap and gradually began to challenge Weidman. This battle moved them closer to Rafferty in the closing laps. With Varnes safely in front, Baer slipped by Weidman off the final turn for third, less than a bikelength behind Rafferty.
Kevin Varnes (89, above) had closer company at the start of the Over 30 final, with Rick Winsett (11), Lew Woods, Ken Mohler and Ken Yoder close behind. Winsett took the lead before the end of the first lap, while Yoder and Mohler got by Woods on the third lap. With a light rain starting, Varnes noticed that Winsett was having trouble hooking up, and moved closer to him. As they started the final lap, Varnes took the lead.
Matt Weidman (65, above), riding Cory Texter's Lancaster H-D-sponsored Honda, went up in the cushion at the start of the 450 Stock Frame final, ahead of Mike Poe, James Rispoli and Joey Parks. Once out in front, he gradually pulled away, leaving the others to swap spots in the early going. Parks took second at the end of the third lap, and Poe got by Rispoli for third on the fifth lap. The battle for second remained close, but the order remained the same to the end.
As he did in the Memorial Day Holeshot race, Tristan Avery (4C, above) won the 85 (7-11) final, but this time he gradually took the lead. He gated third, behind Dalton Gauthier and Dustin Healey, with Cameron Smith and Brandon Price behind him. Avery was in second off turn four on lap one, and he took the lead in the same spot on the next lap. Smith took third on lap four and was nipping at Gauthier's heels at the line.
The Open A class came to the line as the rains started to arrive on schedule. Jason Isennock (47) bolted into the lead, followed by Rafferty, Parks and Dalton Winkler. Winkler took third as they ended the third lap. As they came to the line on the fourth lap, the red flag was displayed, as the rain was making visibility difficult for all but the leaders. After half an hour of steady rain, officials called the event. This left about two-thirds of the finals to be paid from the heat races. Half of those were multiple-heat classes.
Avery also was awarded the 65 final, while Jeremiah Snow had a faster heat time than Tyler Phillips in both the 250 and Open B classes. Weidman had a faster heat time on the Phillips Racing Harley to claim the Open Twin win, over Brian Phillips, who was riding his Bonneville Performance Triumph.
