CAMBRIDGE, MN
Fourteen-year-old dirt-track sensation Cole Anderson (11, above) won a "Triple Crown" of sorts by topping three classes during the final District 23 dirt-track event of the 2009 season, held at the Isanti County Fairgrounds and promoted by On Track Promotions.
The Larson's Cycle/Diesel Minnesota/Randy's Toy Repair-sponsored speedster notched his first win of the day in the Open A class. Anderson pulled the holeshot and led third-generation flat-tracker Cale Langland, Cole Fealy, Andrew Hook, Dustin Paul and the rest of the 10-rider field to the checkers.
Next up was the 250 A class, in which Anderson turned in a carbon-copy performance, with Paul, Langland, Dan Jacobson, Riley Rassmusson and female speedsters Delia Langland and Madison Hook in hot pursuit.
When celebrity track announcer Eric Brouhard called the 450 A class to the line, Anderson soon found some resistance, in the form of Maple Grove native Rich Delak, who hounded Anderson throughout the main event, using an outside line that saw the twosome racing side by side on several occasions. The smooth-riding teenager remained unflappable, however, and recorded win number three on the day. Meanwhile, an exciting race in itself was developing behind Anderson and Delak, and it reached fever pitch when first-year dirt-tracker Jake Leclair mounted a charge that propelled the former motocrosser from fifth to third as he raced by Cole Fealy and Craig Dye in the closing laps. Even though the battle between Anderson and Delak was an intense one, the two competitors were seen shaking hands while exiting the track.
Delak proved he had plenty of game left in him as he returned to action in the Over 30 class, this time squaring off against Kurt Boehlke. Again, Delak preferred the outside line, while Boehlke chose the inside portion of the track and, much like his previous battle with Anderson, Delak locked handlebars with Boehlke several times. Things got really interesting when, on the final circuit, the dicing duo came upon a lapped rider in turn one. As they checked up to avoid the obstacle, Delak came out of turn two clearly the leader, but Boehlke throttled up his KTM for one last charge and repassed Delak down the back chute to secure the victory. Tony Hauer, Kurt Funk and newcomer Dan Bailey rounded out the field.
Yet another barn-burner came in the 600 Vintage class, as heat-race winners Jeff Ellison and Lee Ganske prepared for battle in the main event. After the start, Ellison held the lead and seemed to be repeating his first-place performance in the Over 50 class. Ganske had other plans for the Delano, Minnesota, native, however, as he made a dicey pass in turn four at the halfway point of the race to steal the win. Dave Darsow, Tom Fox and holeshot ace Mike Schmidt rounded out the top five.
Saving the best for last, Josh Koch (68K, above) piloted his Jeff's S.O.S./Anderson Plumbing/General Engineering/Dammer Designs/Motorex-sponsored 450cc Honda to exciting victories in both the 450 Semi Pro and Open Semi Pro finales. Although National number 29 Jake Mataya rode his Delano Sports Center/Highpoint Sales/Utopia-backed 450 Kawasaki to victories in both of the heat races, Koch made the necessary changes to his bike between races and turned the tables in the main events.
"I changed the settings on the ride-height adjuster and flipped the rear tire around so I had a new edge," explained Koch afterward. " It felt a lot better."
It must have made the difference, because Koch was the class of the field in both divisions.
