LODI, CA
For many in the Open A class at the Lodi Cycle Bowl, when they hear there's a TT on the schedule, they start to cringe - especially when they find out that Mikey "Prince of Lodi TT" Martin will be in attendance. This week was no exception, as Martin overcame a bad start to take another win on the TT.
Big Rob "Robo" McCarty (27, above) got the holeshot in the Over 40 A main event, in front of Robert Curry (1) and Riddle Racing's Greg Riddle. The two up front quickly began to gap the field, with Curry looking for a way past the solid riding of McCarty. As the laps wore down, it appeared McCarty had gotten the job done as he was entering the second-to-last turn. But a small miscue allowed Curry to slip through a small gap and take the checkered flag just a few feet in front of McCarty.
"Arm pump," McCarty explained later.
Each week there seems to be a few new riders showing up at the Lodi Motorcycle Club's Cycle Bowl, and this week was no exception. Ryan Fulton (38, above) was the newcomer this week. Fulton proved he has what it takes, and he took to the point at the exit of the tree turn in the Open C main. After getting the holeshot, Robert Bacosa Jr., riding his Herrera Racing/Tony Herrera/RAB Racing/ASV-backed CRF450, managed to hold on to second. With Fulton out front and pulling away, the battle was for second, between Bacosa and Matt Anderson. Bacosa slid a little wide through the sweeper that leads to the front straight, which allowed Anderson to get by. The order was set: Fulton, Anderson and Bacosa.
Shane Hegarty and Justin Lovelace seem to find each other every week in the Open B class. This week, Lovelace was able to keep Hegarty at bay for the win. These two have been putting on a good show each week. Rounding out the top three was veteran Aren Clark.
As usual, the Open A main event got under way at 9 p.m. Holeshot master Stewart Barber beat all the others up the hill and into the tree turn for the first time. Stockton Honda/Country Club Hardware's Kyle Anselmi was right behind Barber, followed Ryan Foster and Mikey Martin. Foster was Martin's first victim, as he was by before the end of the first lap. Anselmi gave no breaks to Barber and tried to push his way through to the front. Martin took advantage of the battling duo and made his way past both of them on the way up the hill. Anselmi followed Martin for second, as Barber was forced wide. The finishing order was set, with Foster riding a lonely race for fourth.
