DUBACH, LA
After a brief break in the schedule, LACC series points chasers, along with many other riders from nearby race series, anxiously awaited the green flag at round four, under beautiful, sunny skies. A lot of chatter around the pits took place regarding the many top riders making an appearance, such as 2009 and defending LACC Series champion and SERA Enduro champion Stephen Reed, past World MX Champion Trampas Parker, past Arkansas Hare Scrambles champion Bryan Vaughan, and young Texas off-road ace Cheyenne Harmon. Past SERA champion and Top 10 National Enduro rider Clay Boreing even blew the dust off his older bike to come join in the fun!
To no one's surprise, Suzuki City/Thermo Probe/Klim/Thumper Racing's Stephen Sturges put his Suzuki out in the lead early by taking one of his usual holeshots. Warren Drilling/Rekluse/Moose/Shoei/DP Brakes-backed KTM rider Bryan Vaughan (30, above) quickly fought his way to the front of the pack during the first lap. By the end of the opening lap, Vaughan came through the scoring tent first, followed closely by KTM rider Boreing and Sturges. Although he was jumping back into racing action with no recent training, Boreing was able to hang on for a respectable sixth-overall finish. Meanwhile, KTM/RPM Cycles/Fox Racing's Harmon and Munn-backed Trampas Parker (13) worked their way up to give Vaughan a little company. This resulted in a great battle among the three, with Vaughan at one point finding himself back in third place. Vaughan then impressively passed both Parker and Harmon at one time by blasting up the optional Woods Tank Hillclimb. He then also cleared the optional Powersport Grafx Log Pile to put a gap on the other Expert riders who were opting to go around the easy way. His hard work and training paid off with an exciting win over a stacked class. Parker and Harmon continued to swap positions, with Harmon eventually landing in second overall due to Parker's admittedly tiring toward the end of the race.
"The day went good, other than these two guys putting a spanking on me," laughed series leader Parker afterward, "but that's great, because riding around up front all the time is no fun, and it let me see where I need to go back and work. The last two laps, I ran out of gas - I didn't hydrate enough - but they outran me fair and square, and I'll be looking forward to the next one."
In addition to thanking his supporters, such as KTM and Fly Racing, Parker also thanked the LACC Series staff, the nice crowds that come out to the races, and the moms and dads out there who bring their kids out for a good time.
KTM/Chuck's Used Appliance/Performance Cycles-sponsored XC2 Lites rider Ryan Breaux's day was uneventful, but in a good way. He took the holeshot, kept the lead for almost the entire race, and captured another class win, and also a solid eighth-overall finish. Mike's Outdoors-backed Clint Woods and fellow KTM rider House of Cycles' Russ Wiggers rounded out the podium in the XC2 Lites class with great performances. All in all, everyone had a great time climbing the hills of Dubach, Louisiana, and look forward to coming back. Local favorite Jake Haddox, on his Soil Stabilizers/Brewton Insurance Yamaha, was even able to win the Novice Lites class in front of his hometown friends and family.
