FORT NECESSITY, LA
Round three of the MTA Louisiana Cross Country Series, The Farm Country Classic, took place under warm, sunny skies in Fort Necessity, Louisiana. As this was Father's Day, three fathers were treated to Lowe's gift cards but had to get their heart rate up a little and sweat a bit running to the podium. An entertaining video can be found on AcadianaRacing.com, but to summarize, the proud winners were Rusty Broussard, Steven Merriett and Stephen Reed.
Round three featured a unique start, in which half the field split off to the right and half to the left. Once meeting back together, the riders immediately dropped into a large ditch and then moved out onto a long whoop section. Stephen Reed chose the left path and blasted through the open field, only to slide out in the next turn, allowing Kawasaki jockey Kevin Hutchinson and KTM rider Stephen Sturges to get by. Hutchinson turned it on and kicked up as much dust as possible, but it would take more than that to keep the hard-charging Reed and Honda pilot Jason Harvey (9, below) from getting by.
Once out in front, Reed had his RM250 on cruise control until Harvey started closing in on the final laps. Reed did an excellent job at pacing himself and took the overall win, and so remains undefeated after three rounds. Harvey finished close behind in second. KTM rider Jason Reine was third overall. Hutchinson was fourth overall, and Honda of Lafayette's Ryan Breaux rounded out the top five. An action-packed highlights video by Carolyn Reed can be found at www.AcadianaRacing.com.
Later in the day, Reine came up from the second row in the XC2 Lites class, passed Sturges, and caught Hutchinson, which led to a great battle. After working hard to get by Hutchinson for many miles, Reine's break finally came when Hutchinson opted to go around the Performance Cycles tire jump. Reine successfully got through the extreme section and out in front of Hutchinson just in time to hit a few jumps on the motocross track and dive back in the woods. Breaux once again put in a smart ride on his Honda and remained consistent, finishing second in the XC2 Lites class. Breaux has a motocross background and will soon be able to show off his talents at round four, which will be held on July 12 at Cypress Creek MX near Shreveport, Louisiana.
