SICILY ISLAND, LA
Round two of the MTA Louisiana Cross-Country Series, The Jim Bowie, took place on Mother's Day in the beautiful hills of Sicily Island. The real race began at the riders' meeting, when all of the moms lined up and raced to the podium for their Wal-Mart gift cards. After a few elbows to the ribs and some pushing and shoving, Mississippi's Charay DuBose and Louisianans Alex Wiggers and Cheryl Fontenot took the top honors.
Starting lines full of racers were anxious to get the show on the road and go after the $100 cash prize. In the XC1 Expert class, ProFlow-backed KTM rider Nathan Knight, Suzuki City Suzuki jockey Stephen Reed (2, above) and Cycle Sport USA-sponsored KTM rider Kyle Henderson were tied going around the first turn, and they set off on a fast pace ahead of the class. Arkansas Hare Scrambles champion Bryan Vaughan needed a few cranks to get his Kawasaki KX250 started and he left the line almost dead last, but he soon made his way through the pack and caught up with the leaders.
Knight, Reed and Henderson swapped positions back and forth until brake problems unfortunately ended Knight's day. Vaughan stepped it up toward the end of the race and got by Henderson and closed in on Reed, but when the dust settled, on the podium it was Stephen Reed (center) in first, Bryan Vaughan (left) in second and Kyle Henderson (right) in third. Performance Cycle-backed KTM rider Thomas Fagan and Hutchinson ATV Repair-sponsored Kawasaki jockey Kevin Hutchinson rounded out the top five.
In the XC2 Expert Lites class, KTM jockey Jason Reine captured another win at round two, but he had his hands full fending off southern Louisiana motocross talent Jeremy Domingue, who rides for Honda of Lafayette. Domingue showed he has what it takes with an impressive sixth-overall finish in his first cross-country-style event. Third place went to Neuville Boat Works' Dusty Neuville; the KTM rider also pressured Reine for a bit until several crashes knocked him back a position.
Other spectator highlights included the Moose Racing Hillclimb, the Spectro Car Graveyard, the MTA Sand Pit, and the Bridgestone Berm, which kept the spectators entertained and the support crews on their toes. The very technical, sandy, hilly course took its toll on some riders, but the majority had a great time. The support of the Cooper family, who prepared this top-notch venue, is much appreciated.
