GEISMAR, LA
Round one of the inaugural MTA Louisiana Cross Country Series got off to a muddy start at 225 Xtreme Motosports Park in Geismar, after Saturday night rains completely saturated the course. Despite the conditions, the turnout was excellent and the competition was tight.
In the XC1 Expert class, Suzuki City-backed Stephen Reed (2) put in a smooth and consistent ride on his RM250 for the victory. Mississippi's Nathan Knight kept his Pro Flow Motorsports KTM 250XC close behind for second, and Hobgood Trucking/City Cycles/Reckless-backed Suzuki RM-Z450 rider Coy Hobgood slung enough mud to capture the final podium position.
Reed and Mississippi resident and Honda rider Terry Rogers led the pack around the first few turns of the slippery motocross track until Hobgood grabbed the lead and headed into the woods on a mission. Hobgood led the entire first lap until he lost valuable time attempting the Moose Tire Jump in the grass-track, within sight of the MotoTally scoring tent. This allowed Reed and Knight to reel him in, and they soon got by on lap two, back in the woods. Reed and Knight swapped positions until Reed made a pass stick and settled into a comfortable lead, ahead of Knight. Reed, Knight and Hobgood maintained that order until the checkered flags flew after six laps of slimy mud racing.
KTM 200 pilot Jason Reine of Walker, Louisiana, got off to a good start and recovered from a midrace crash to win the XC2 Expert Lites class. Honda of Lafayette's Ryan Breaux kept the rubber side down on his CRF250 to earn the second-place position, and Yamaha 250F-mounted Clint Woods finished third.
Mark Jamroz of Benton, Louisiana, made the trip down to Geismar, hauling a new Husqvarna TC310 and a BMW G450 to have on display. He won the Senior class. Jamroz was followed by his traveling buddy David Hall, on a KTM, in second. Third place went to local hero Mac Edmonston, with the National High School MX Association.
All of the remaining riders, including the kids, toughed it out in these extreme conditions and rode through the checkered flags missing goggles but with grins on their faces and memories that will last a lifetime.
