Golden State Cycle Summer Arenacross Series
Round 2: Tri-County Fairgrounds

Condon, Elbers Battle at Bishop

BISHOP, CA

Thirteen women — including Fionna Condon (28), Debbie Hildebrand (behind Condon), Kelly Wright (734), Marisa Graef (5) and Amber Parker (27) — lined up to do battle in the nearly 100-degree heat at round two of the 14th annual Golden State Cycle Summer Arenacross Series, held in the high-desert community of Bishop, California.

In moto one, Jonnel Janewicz-Legget got the holeshot award presented by Mammoth Mountain, followed by Fionna Condon and Taneya Jackson. Meanwhile, race favorite Tanya Elbers was busy pulling her front wheel out from under the start gate. While Elbers was blazing through traffic after her start-gate mishap, Up front, Fionna doubled her CRF250X in a tricky jump section to pass Jonnel for the lead.

By lap two of the five-lap race, Fionna had opened up a commanding lead, while Elbers, who had caught both Janewicz-Legget and Jackson, joined in a heated battle for second place. This three-way action on the tight arenacross course slowed all three riders as they traded positions for a lap and a half. Eventually, Elbers passed Jonnel and KTM-mounted Jackson and set her sights on leader Fionna. Although Elbers put on a great ride to catch the leader, it was not to be. Fionna won moto one, with Elbers grabbing second and Amber Parker quietly sneaking into third.

Elbers got the holeshot in moto two, followed by Fionna, Jackson and Jonnel. By turn three of the first lap, Fionna had passed Elbers for the lead, but then she huckabucked in the whoop section and was repassed by Elbers.

As the two battled around the course, Fionna outjumped Elbers in the same sections she'd used in moto one to take the lead. Unfortunately, her front end washed out in the next right-hand corner and she went down, dropping to third. Fionna, thanks to her "E" button, quickly got back up to speed; she passed Jackson and then began to close in on Elbers.

By lap three, Fionna had caught Elbers and started battling with her for the lead. For the next two laps, they traded positions. Both riders tried to outcorner each other, going outside in and inside out in a effort to gain the advantage. Fionna clearly had the whoop section dialed, but the experienced Elbers rode a smart race. In the end, Elbers topped Fionna by a bikelength at the finish line.
