World Cup of Motocross Pre-Race Notes:

Good morning. (Or good afternoon or good evening, depending on where you are around the world today). Welcome to Cycle News' live Virtual Grandstand Coverage of the World Cup of Motocross from Glen Helen Raceway in San Bernardino, California. Spread the word and tune in...

If you're reading this, you already know that today's event replaces the Motocross of Nations that was originally to have been held at Competition Park in San Jacinto, California. And you've also read and heard most of the drama that let to the MXoN being cancelled/postponed and moved to Spain in October. Today's race is not the Motocross of Nations - but the Glen Helen crew, Vintage Iron owner Rick Doughty, and an army of volunteers and sponsors have pulled this race together during the last week as a suitable replacement to allow the racers, fans, and American motocross community to hold an event of major International stature.

Riders have been confirming literally by the hour all week, and the event has been shaping up with dramatic developments each day. For all the official World Cup of Motocross pre-event details, go to (appropriately)
www.worldcupofmotocross.com

Original MXoN Team USA members Ricky Carmichael and Mike LaRocco have elected not to ride the World Cup; their replacements will be the very capable Sean Hamblin and Kyle Lewis, who have the full support of their sponsors SoBe Suzuki and Moto-xXx, respectively. They'll join original MXoN team member Tim Ferry, who also has the full support of the factory Yamaha truck. All three riders are known to be fast here; at the AMA/Chevy Trucks U.S. National MX here in May, Ferry finished 3rd overall, Lewis was 7th, and Hamblin 16th.

International riders racing today who also have lap time from the MX National here in May include:

Other notable international riders that were originally to have ridden the MXoN that will not be riding today will be Joel Smets, Stefan Everts, Michael Pichon.

The World Cup of Motocross will have a $100,000 purse to be divided by the winning International teams. The purse breakdown is: 1st - $30,000; 2nd - $15,000; 3rd - $10,000; 4th - $9,000; 5th - $8,000; 6th - $7,000; 8th - $5,000; 9th - $4,000; 10th - $3,000; 11th - $2,000; 12th - $1,000.

The World Cup of Motocross marks the debut of Sebastien Tortelli riding an RM250 for Team Suzuki. Chad Reed is riding a Yamaha 450, a big step up in cc's from the 125 he's been riding all season. Grant Langston, also known as a 125 pilot, is riding a KTM 250 today. Factory Honda rider Ernesto Fonseca, who finished 4th in the AMA 125 Nationals, is riding a 250.

Guest appearance? X-Games backflip king Mike Metzger has been drafted by the New Zealand team to round out their trio...could produce some very unorthodox passing maneuvers...Check that passport - Willy Musgrave is on the roster, riding his Yamaha 250 for the Czech Republic alongside Marco Dorsch and Josef Dobes.

Temporarily Retired from Retirement: Greg Albertyn was drafted off the rocker this weekend to represent his home country of South Africa; the likeable ex-World MX Champ joins teammates Grant Langston and Kevin McGovern.

Fast feet? The USA Team of Lewis, Hamblin, and Ferry all happen to be Etnies shoes-sponsored riders. Maybe coincidence, maybe not.

Deep Dish: Remember the huge "Talladega" first turn at the Glen Helen National in May? It's even bigger. The thing has been reshaped into an even bigger bowl-shaped turn, some 70 feet tall at the outside. It's enormous.

Scorin' it: Some of the teams are comprised of just two riders. The modified scoring system will take each team's best two riders' combined scores from each of the three 20-minute World Cup motos to arrive at the overall result.

A very respectable crowd has streamed into the Glen Helen facility; the weather gods have smiled on the track...with the morning mostly cloudy and clearing into the afternoon, we should have a very comfortable day with temperatures in the high 70s. The gate will drop for the first World Cup moto at 11am PST - stay tuned.

[World Cup Moto Three]

With a review of the official results, the USA and Australian teams are TIED for points as we go into the final / 3rd moto of the day. Whichever team has the best combined two riders' scores this moto will take home the honors as the winning country of the World Cup of Motocross, and they'll take their $30,000 share of the $100,000 purse.

With a strong crowd, outstanding racing, and many countries' teams here today (and even those who are not) stating they will not be racing at the replacement MXoN event in Spain in October, it looks like today's results will be the ones pointed to for the planet's motocross supremacy...

Get ready as the 35 riders line up at the start (after allowing for the day's attrition rate) - it's literally all on the line for this final moto of the day...

The 30-second board goes sideways, the starter referee sprints out of the way, and as the pack rails through the big Talladega first turn, the holeshot for the final moto goes to Sean Hamblin, followed by Reed, Langston, now Langston moves into 2nd, Ferry is running 4th...Dobb crashed early, gets back underway...Hamblin is taken out by Langston at the bottom of the mountain...

Lap 2 - Reed leads the way across the line, followed by Ferry, Fonseca, Langston, Byrne, King, Atsuta, Albertyn...Lewis is running outside the top 15...right now, Australia is looking strong for the win, but it's early and a lot can happen...

Lap 3 - Ferry is running 2nd behind Reed, but the other USA team members are farther back that Aussies Byrne and Anderson running more ahead of them...Kyle Lewis is a lap down, and off the gas...Hamblin is up & running in the top 20, trying to move forward...Dobb is cruising around at the back...

Lap 4 - Order is Reed, Ferry, Fonseca, Langston, Byrne, King, Albertyn, Atsuta, Roy, Narita, Morgan, Cooper, Dube, Andersen, Thain, Israel...

Lap 5 - Ferry's no longer near the front - Reed still continues to lead over Fonseca and Langston...then we have Ferry, Byrne, King, Albertyn, Atsuta...

Lap 6 - Reed, Fonseca, Langston, Ferry back in 4th, Byrne, King, Albertyn, Dube, Atsuta, Hamblin...we're at the halfway point in the moto...Reed leads by 11 seconds...

Lap 7 - Reed's on top of the world, leading the international pack, as Fonseca tries to hold off Langston...Langston moved to 2nd place, putting Fonseca back to 3rd...Ferry is still running in 4th, Byrne 5th, Hamblin is running in the top 10, but not far enough forward to keep the US in the lead...Ferry is trying to get up closer to Fonseca and Langston to try & improve his position...

Lap 8 - Reed is working is way through the lappers, running order behind him is Langston, Fonseca, Ferry, Byrne, Morgan, Narita, King, Roy, Hamblin, Atsuta, Dube, Thain, Anderson...Albertyn is having bike problems and moving backwards in the pack...

Lap 9 - The closest racing on the track is for 2nd, between Langston, Fonseca and Ferry as they tighten up into a very even group...Hamblin has moved past King over the log jump to move into 8th...

Lap 10 - Reed is shown the 2-lap sign as he continues to grow his lead and realize that Australia will be at the top of the world if he can just hold it together...Fonseca and Langston are giving each other fits - Ferry is moving into position to get into 2nd if the two ahead of him begin to take each other out...Byrne is 5th, and Hamblin is in 9th...

Lap 11 - White flag...Reed continues to lead by 8+ seconds as he does his part to win for Australia...Fonseca crashes out, leaving Langston to fend off Ferry trying to charge for 2nd...as they come around, Reed takes the 3rd moto win, followed in by Langston, Ferry...Michael Byrne crosses in 4th, and secures Australia the World Cup of Motocross honors (and their $30,000 share of the $100,000 World Cup purse)...then Morgan, Hamblin to secure 2nd for Team USA, Narita, King, Atsuta, Dube (good enough to get Canada on the podium for 3rd in the world), Roy, Anderson, Odagiri, Thain, Israel, Josef, Nielsen, Salvatierra, Prince, Jensen.
