Millville Pre-Race Notes:

Welcome to Cycle News' live Virtual Grandstand coverage of Round #10 of the AMA/Chevy Trucks U.S. Motocross Championships from Spring Creek MX Park in Millville, Minnesota. Virtual Grandstand of each round of the '02 MX National is sponsored exclusively by Asterisk.

The owners of Spring Creek, Jeff and Greta Martin, and their staff are celebrating the 20th anniversary of hosting outdoor nationals here in Millville. The track took a major soaking on Friday night as heavy thunderstorms dumped rain throughout the area. Saturday morning cleared up, and clear, breezy conditions (along with some outstanding track prep) left the course in perfect condition.

The forecast for Sunday is to be sunny with a high of 75 degrees, possibly the most pleasant weather of the series so far.

The motocross community will always remember Minnesota's hometown son, Donny Schmit, who won the 250cc World MX title back in the 80's but died unexpectedly due to Aplastic Anemia. In his memory, the Donny Schmit memorial race and auction is being held this wekeend, and after the end of Sunday's pro racing, the pros will be auctioning off their gear at the announcing tower, all to benefit the fight against the rare disease. Later this fall, Donny Schmit will be posthumously inducted into the AMA Hall of Fame. Schmit had his share of success racing the Nationals at Millville, winning the 125cc class on a Suzuki in both 1987 and '88.

Is there any drama left in the 250 class? Barring a catastrophe of biblical proportions, Team Honda's Ricky Carmichael will leave this weekend as the owner of the 250 National Championship. After winning every 250 National moto so far this season (18 so far), Carmichael has a perfect point tally of 450 vs. Team Yamaha's Tim Ferry's 349, and will only need to beat Ferry by one position in one moto to clinch the title. Carmichael seems to set a new record every time he rides, and this weekend he has the opportunity to match the longest winning streak in AMA Motocross, set by Mark Barnett back during the 1980-81 season.

Ricky Carmichael has had no problems at Millville in the past; he won the 125 National here in 1997 & '98, and won the 250 National here in 2000 and '01. John Dowd won the Millville 250 National in 1994, and is set to race here this weekend.

The rundown on 250 points going into Millville: 1. Carmichael (450/9 wins); 2. Ferry (349); 3. Lusk (309); 4. Tortelli (283); 5. Lewis (257); 6. Dowd (205); 7. Reynard (201); 8. LaRocco (196); 9. Hamblin (139); 10. Voss (133).

Is there any drama left in the 125 class?
Most of the buzz this weekend seems be centering on the tiddlers...Team Kawasaki's James "Bubba" Stewart comes into Millville on an 84-point cushion over Team Blimpie Suzuki's Branden Jesseman. Consistenly fast, and improving by the week, Jesseman has not yet won a 125 National overall this season. If Stewart adds 17 more points to his lead after Millville, he will also leave with the #1 plate. If not...there's always Binghamton next week. Team Red Bull/KTM's Grant Langston will also return to action in the 125 class this weekend. Langston won in an epic battle over Mike Brown here at Millville last year, and many fans will be watching to see if he really is 100%. Boost Mobile/Yamaha of Troy's Chad Reed is also looking to avenge the results of the previous rounds, and Suzuki's Danny Smith would also like to make Millville the second sand track of the year to gain a 125 National MX win.

The 125 points going into Millville: 1. Stewart (382/7 wins); 2. Jesseman (298); 3. Reed (288/1 win); 4. Fonseca (275); 5. Danny Smith (237/1 win); 6. Walker (213); 7. Antunez (196); 8. Ward (162); 9. Sorby (147); 10. Huffman (145).

Travis Pastrana won the 125 race here in 2000, and as recently as three weeks ago, was expected to make his comeback appearance this weekend. Unfortunately, that's no longer the case as the SoBe Suzuki star was injured again as he wrapped up his medal-winning performance at the Gravity Games.

Racing on the Tube: ESPN2's coverage of the Millville 250cc National will air on Saturday, August 24th at 6:00pm EST, and the Millville 125cc National will air on Sunday, August 25th at 3:00pm EST. Repeat airings will be (250cc) on Wednesday, August 28th and 6:00am EST, and (125cc) on Friday, August 30th at 7:00am EST. Another cool moto-item of interest on TV soon will be "Legends of Motorsport - Mikkola the Master" airing at 8:30am EST on Thursday, August 29th on Speed Channel. Check your local listings, circle your calendar, set your VCR...

Sellin' It: Both Ricky Carmichael and James Stewart signed merchandising deals this week with AMA Pro Racing's official merchandiser, Wateree Sports, to sell new lines of their casual apparel, shirts and hats. Race fans can find the new line of official AMA Pro Racing products at many professional events including all AMA U.S. Motocross and U.S. Superbike events, as well as several top AMA U.S. Flat Track Championship rounds. At the races, products will be for sale under the roof of Wateree's new AMA Pro Racing Apparel 18-wheeler. Products can also be purchased online.

Back in the day: The first year for an AMA Pro National MX here was 1983, when they ran three classes in the same day. Danny "Magoo" Chandler won the 500cc class on a Honda, Ron Lechien won the 125cc class on a Yamaha, and Bob Hannah won the 250cc class on a Honda. Other racers, still active for this weekend, who have won here before include Mike LaRocco (won the 125 class in 1990, '91 and '92), Steve Lamson (won the 125 class in '94 and '96), Robbie Reynard (won the 125 class in 1995), and Nick Wey (won the 125 class in '99). LaRocco, Lamson, Reynard, and Wey are all riding the 2002 250cc MX Nationals.

Tough break: Guy Cooper, hero to the vet masses, crashed in Saturday's practice, injuring his collarbone, putting him out of Sunday's program, and likely for the remainder of the season. Coop just won the 4-Stroke National last weekend at Lakewood, Colorado.

Winning Practice: Ricky Carmichael and James Stewart posted the fastest lap times during Saturday practice. The lap times as recorded by the AMA were: 250s: Carmichael 2:07.238, Ferry 2:11.310, LaRocco 2:11.542, Tortelli 2:11.557, Ramsey 2:12.819, Lusk 2:12.888, Hamblin 2:14.130, Roncada 2:14.564, Reynard 2:14.564, Lewis 2:15.657, Wey 2:16.443. 125s: Stewart 2:12.486, Sorby 2:14.470, Jesseman 2:14.792, Danny Smith 2:14.927, Gosselaar 2:15.038, Fonseca 2:15.088, Langston 2:15.582, Sellards 2:15.726, Preston 2:15.848, Pingree 2:16.039, Byrne 2:16.809.

Tune in Sunday at 1:00pm CST for the drop of the gate on the first 125 National moto from Millville...
