Unadilla Pre-Race Notes:
Welcome to Round 8 of the 2002 AMA / Chevy Trucks U.S. Motocross Championships, as Dunlop Radial Rover Light Truck Tires presents the Unadilla Valley Motocross Nationals.
Cycle News' live "Virtual Grandstand" web coverage of Unadilla, and every 2002 round of the series is sponsored exclusively by Asterisk, and we thank them for their support.
Dueling Tourists: After next weekend's race at Washougal, Robbie Reynard will travel to Europe to compete in the August 4th Belgian MX Grand Prix for the CAS Honda team. Reynard is currently running 7th in points for the AMA 250 series. Conversely, New Zealander/GP regular Josh Coppins will be racing this weekend at Unadilla for the Shark Plano Honda team, with factory Honda parts brought over from Europe. Coppins is currently 2nd in the FIM 250cc World Championship Motocross Series. Shark Plano Honda's Scott Sheak (also a man with some recent MXGP experience) has traded his helmet for a clipboard, stepping into the team manager role. Coppins will be running the number #900 on his Honda.
Team Yamaha's David Vuillemin is out for the weekend, back home to France to have his troublesome shoulder overhauled. After last weekend's Troy round, Vuillemin sits 9th in points. SoBe Suzuki's Sean Hamblin has not checked in this weekend; Hamblin was/is 10th in the points chase, but is recovering from a nasty get-off, resulting in a bruised lung, from last weekend at Troy. Heath Voss sits 11th in 250cc points going into Unadilla, and is looking to vault himself into the top 10 after this round.
SoBe Suzuki's Travis Pastrana is still out, and after a tumultuous, rumor-filled week surrounding his injuries, participation at the upcoming X Games, and commitment to racing, has mended his relationship with Suzuki, and may return to the racetrack as soon as the August 18th MX National at Millville, Minnesota. Unadilla '01 was the last time Pastrana won a National moto. Suzuki's Kevin Windham is still out of action as well.
Tube Time: be sure to mark your calendar to tune in or tape ESPN2's coverage of the Unadilla MX Nationals. The 1-hour 250cc race will air at Noon EST on Saturday, July 27th; the 125cc race will immediately follow at 1:00PM EST on 7/27. The 250cc race will repeat at 6:00AM EST on July 31st. Check your local listings.
VG Live vs. TV Tape: also - ESPN2's coverage from last weekend's Troy event will be aired on Sunday, July 21st, starting at Noon EST. Check your local listings, and set your VCR now.
Team Honda's Ricky Carmichael arrives at Unadilla in peak form, having won a record-shattering 14 consecutive National motos - an unbroken streak after seven rounds - this season. The diminuitive Floridian is a giant on the track, with his perfect score of 350 points doing the talking for him. While RC's get-the-lead, check-out-and-hide performances have made for less-than-close racing at the front, Carmichael's performances are garnering him the kind of attention normally reserved for mainstream athletes like Kobe Bryant and Lance Armstrong...like his invitation and appearance at ESPN's "Espy" Awards a couple weeks ago.
Despite Carmichael's rear Dunlop disappearing in the distance, the points race for the next three positions is quite close. Team Yamaha's Timmy Ferry is 2nd in points (263), Team Chevy Trucks / Kawasaki's Ezra Lusk is 3rd (252), and Team Honda's Sebastien Tortelli is 4th (242). With 25 points per moto up for grabs, these are the other top riders to watch as we get through the 2/3 point in the series.
Kyle Lewis continues to impress on the Moto-XXX Honda, putting himself solidly 5th in the 250cc points (194) so far, and earning the attention of the factory team managers as they work to wrap up their team plans for 2003. Lewis is recovering from a couple compressed vertebrae (since Red Bud), but is soldiering through to pull down consistent 7-7 results last weekend. 38-year-old veteran John Dowd is carrying KTM's 250 colors in 6th (169 points); Dowd is riding the 2-stroke KTM250SX this weekend. Robbie Reynard is running 7th (142 points), and assuming he doesn't apply for permanent Belgian citizenship, will not miss a beat when he returns from Europe to race at Millville and the remaining Nationals. Amsoil/Dr. Martens/Journeys/Competition Accessories Honda rider Mike LaRocco is clawing his way back into the standings, with strong rides on his post-injury comeback tour; LaRocco, who won the 250 class events at Unadilla in 1994 and 1995, is 8th (130 points) going into this weekend. Kawasaki's Stephane Roncada is back up to speed this weekend; at Troy, he suffered a brutal face-bruising crashing before getting back to finish the race.
Unadilla is widely considered to be the most "European" of the American MX National venues, with its grassy, natural terrain layout throughout the Unadilla Valley hillsides. Look for the European riders to do well here. Ricky Carmichael has been trying to drum up a little suspense the last couple weeks, cautioning "Unadilla is not my favorite track on the circuit, and I've been beat there before. I'm really going to have to work there because there are some other guys that go good there, too, and it won't be easy."
Statistician, please: Ricky Carmichael has won here the past four years: he started with his 125cc National wins here in 1998 & 1999, then moved up to the 250s and won here in 2000 and 2001.
125 Spotlight: Team Chevy Trucks Kawasaki rookie James "Bubba" Stewart rolls into Unadilla fresh off his blistering 1-1 moto wins from Troy, his fifth overall win of the 125 outdoor series. Team Boost/Mobile/Yamaha of Troy's Chad Reed had another unlucky weekend in Ohio, suffering a flat front tire in the first moto, allowing Stewart to escape Kenworthy's with a 55-point lead. Stewart was suffering stomach cramps in the Ohio heat, but he gutted it out for the win anyway. (OK, sorry, that was bad)...
Pro Circuit Kawasaki/Chevy Trucks' Shae Bentley is back to race this weekend.
Team Blimpie Suzuki's 125 riders are representing the yellow brand well, with Branden Jesseman (3rd in points) and Danny Smith (5th in points) pulling down 2nd & 3rd respectively, last weekend. Buddy Antunez 6th in points) has also had some impressive rides this season. Team Honda's Ernesto Fonseca, after finishing 4th at Troy, is 4th in the 125 points.
Try the Kiwis: Besides Josh Coppins riding the 250 race the weekend, fellow New Zealander Ben Townley will ride his factory Red Bull KTM 125 at Unadilla, running #733 on his bike. Townley gave it a go at Budds Creek, and ran in the top 10 in both motos there. Since then, when he returned to Europe, he won the Swedish 125GP, and returns to the US looking to improve on the GP-like Unadilla course.
Last year's Unadilla 125 winner, Red Bull/KTM's Grant Langston, is still out with injuries, and will not be competing today, as is his teammate Steve Boniface.
History Books: The first National MX winner here at Unadilla was Gary Jones on a Yamaha in 1972. Steve Stackable won the first 500 Unadilla in 1976 on a Suzuki, and Damon Bradshaw won the first 125 National held here in 1989. Guy Cooper, who won the 125 class at the 1990 and 1991 Unadilla Nationals, is here today, campaigning his uber-thumper KTM540. Cooper is now 40 years old; he's made every National so far this season, and is running 15th in points.
Bummer: Remember the announcement a couple months ago that Ex-World and Ex-National Champion Danny LaPorte would race the Unadilla National? No-go, due to the FMF bigwig's recent ankle injury.
Hot Hands: Fastest lap times from yesterday were posted by Carmichael-Ferry-Tortelli-Reynard-Lusk in the 250s. Coppins' times were not posted Saturday, but his Sunday morning practice times have him running around top-5 speed. The fastest 125 lap times on Saturday were posted by Stewart-Jesseman-Fonseca-Preston-Huffman-Antunez.
Weather Report: Clear, breezy, warm...perfect.
Tune in just before our live coverage begins from Undadilla at 1pm EST on Sunday, July 20th.

Are you ready to do the 'Dilla? Stay tuned, opening ceremonies are underway...
The hills are alive with the sound of the screaming Unadilla hill people, about to be joined by the sounds of screaming 125s...the gate drops, and the first holeshot of the day goes to James Stewart, followed by Reed, Sorby and Casey Johnson...Sorby leaps into 2nd place...Reed's back to 3rd...Kevin Johnson crashed in the first turn and is out...
Lap 2 - Stewart, Sorby, Reed, then Fonseca, Johnson, Jesseman, Byrne, Buckelew, Danny Smith, Gosselaar, Antunez, Thain...Stewart has about a 5 second lead already...Sorby and Reed running close together...Casey Johnson moves back ahead of Fonseca for 3rd...
Lap 3 - Stewart, Reed, Sorby, C. Joshnson, Fonseca, Jesseman, Byrne, Smith, Buckelew, Antunez, Gosselaar, Matt Walker, Thain...Stewart is circulating at unbelievable speed, Reed has stretched his advantage over third, which now belongs to Fonseca again, looks like Casey Johnson must have had a problem out there on the course...
Lap 4 - Stewart continues to stretch his lead, as Reed pulls well clear of his pursuers in his efforts to catch the leader...the best race near the front is between Sorby and Fonseca as they trad lines through the corners...
Lap 5 - Fonseca and Sorby, Sorby and Fonseca, back and forth, and Jesseman has joined this epic battle for 3rd...Fonseca has the advantage for the moment, but Sorby is trying all kinds of lines, hitting kickers and lines that didn't exist...Jesseman give Sorby a nudge, Sorby barely holds the advantage, both riders are hammering, but riding clean when they could be taking each other out...
Lap 6 - Stewart and Reed still well ahead, but this battle for 3rd is carrying that trio a little closer to Reed...after that, it's Byrne, Danny Smith, Walker, Buckelew, Antunez,Demuth, and Gosselaar...Stewart with a 9-second lead on Reed...lap times are in the 2:15-2:17 range for the leaders...
Lap 7 - Jesseman is now clear in 3rd, but Casey Johnson leads a knot of riders battling for 4th now, including Johnson, Fonseca, D. Smith, Sorby, and Walker...then its a ways back to Buckelew, Antunes, Demuth, Gosselaar, and Townley...
Lap 8 - James Stewart has a nearly 11 second lead, as the Kawasaki rider kicks it up a notch, running 2 seconds faster this last lap than the Aussie...Jesseman's beginning to catch Reed, and may be within passing range in a couple laps...Johnson, Fonseca, and Smith pretty much equidistant, then there's a good dice between Pro Circuit teamsters Sorby and Walker...Reed's picking it up somewhat, running a faster lap than Stewart this time and keeping him in sight...
Lap 9 - only about a 2-second gap now from Stewart back to Reed, and the race for the lead is about to happen...Stewart pulls it back out again as they emerge from the back section...Reed still showing 2 seconds faster this last lap...after that, Jesseman's soldiering along in 3rd, then the race for 4th is still very close between Johnson, Fonseca, and Danny SMith...
Lap 10 - Reed's showing tremendous speed through the full-throttle sections of the course, and reeling in Stewart in an attempt to get close enough to make something happen...
Lap 11 - Reed now has Stewart in his sights, cutting another 2 seconds out of the Floridian's lead, only 4 seconds +/- down, and gaining...Jesseman, Fonseca, Byrne, Danny Smith, Walker, Sorby, Townley, Antunez, Bueckelew, Preston, and Demuth...
Lap 12 - Reed's all over Stewart - Stewart must have a problem, totally let Reed by for the lead, without even a fight...Running order is Reed, Stewart, Jesseman, Fonseca, Walker, Byrne, Smith, Sorby, Townley...Kawasaki's Bruce Stjernstrom is so far not reporting anything wrong with the bike...Stewart steps it back up now, and repasses Reed for the lead...this is one of the strangest motos we've seen...
Lap 13 - Who knows what that was all about, but after Stewart let Reed by, he easily passed him back, and is now 1.6 seconds ahead...if that was a psych-out technique, it was a good one...
Lap 14 - Stewart is still keeping Reed at bay, and they're running close enough for it to still be a good race...Jesseman's still 3rd, not really reeling the leaders in, but solid where he is...then it's Walker now up to 4th, Fonseca, Smith, Byrne, Sorby, Townley, Antunez, Preston, Demuth, and Ward...
Lap 15 - the 2 lap sign is shown, Stewart come by with Reed pushing it to try to stay close enough to make a move at the end...Jesseman still 3rd...Stewart looks visibly faster through the areas where Reed was previously gaining on him, may have been studying Reed's lines for a short time at race speeds earlier...
Lap 16 - White flag is out, and Stewart is running it hard to fend off any last-lap attack from Reed...they're into lappers, and Reed is momentarily balked through an S-turn trying to get through...Reed's clear of them, and takes off, but it doesn't look like he'll have enough racetrack remaining to have a shot at Stewart...as they cross the finish line, it's Stewart, Reed, Jesseman, Walker just nosing out Fonseca, then Smith, Byrne, Sorby, Townley, Preston, Demuth, Ward, and Antunez.

The 250cc riders are on their parade lap...there's a new face on the gate this weekend, as Madison, South Dakota's Michael Koch made the program and is lining up with the factory stars...
The 30-second board is up, it goes sideways, the gate drops, the AMA guy sprints out of the way, and the holeshot goes to Mike LaRocco, then Carmichael, and Ferry...Carmichael draws first-lap blood, and moves to the lead, then Ferry and LaRocco pursue...then it's Tortelli, Coppins, Lusk, Lewis, and Cooper...
Lap 2 - Ferry keeps the heat on Carmichael, trying to not let him get away as has been RC's traditional move early in the motos...Carmichael's lap time on the first lap was 2:13.44...Ferry is wringing his Yamaha out for all it's worth, LaRocco Tortelli, Coppins, Lusk, are all close, but not enough to effect any passing yet...
Lap 3 - Carmichael's even faster, running a 2:12 last lap, after that it's Ferry, LaRocco, now Coppins passing Tortelli (waging their own mini-MXdN), Lusk, Lewis, Polotts, Cooper, Wey, Voss, Roncada...
Lap 4 - Carmichael is "only" leading Ferry by 3 seconds, a much closer race this moto than we've become accustomed to...LaRocco all alone in 3rd, Coppins has pulled clear of Tortelli, then Lusk, Lewis, Plotts, Cooper, Wey, Roncada, Voss, Reynard, and Clark Stiles...
Lap 5 - Ferry about 4 seconds down from Carmichael now (into the 2:11s), LaRocco still strong in 3rd, and Coppins is getting pressure from Tortelli with Lusk also close behind...then it's about 6 seconds back to Lewis, Plotts, Wey, Gooper, Roncada, and Voss all freight-training their way around the Unadilla course...
Lap 6 - The big surprise so far is that Carmichael is not 20+ seconds ahead, Ferry is hanging tough, still only about 4 seconds down, looking for any opportunity to gain ground...
Lap 7 - Carmichael, Ferry, LaRocco, Coppins, Tortelli, Lusk, Lewis, Plotts, Wey, Reynard, Roncada, Cooper, Voss, Dowd, Ryan Clark...Carmichael leads by 6.3 seconds...
Lap 8 - Tortelli has moved past Coppins to assume the 5th-place spot...Carmichael leads Ferry by a still-relatively small 6 seconds...
Lap 9 - Carmichael, Ferry, LaRocco (still charging), Tortelli, Coppins, Lusk, Lewis, Plotts, Reynard (preparing to pass), Wey, Roncada, Cooper...
Lap 10 - Carmichael running 2 seconds a lap faster than Ferry, lead is now 8.8 seconds, LaRocco is running the fastest lap last time around, even faster than RC...LaRocco is still about 6 seconds aft of Ferry...
Lap 11 - Ferry picked it back up, must've been signaled by his mechanics to twist it, on the same pace now as leader Carmichael and LaRocco behind...Tortelli is still 4th, then Coppins, Lusk, Reynard up to 7th, then Lewis, Plotts, Wey, Roncada, and Cooper...Reynard has moved from mid-pack up to 7th, but it's a long way up ahead to Lusk...
Lap 12 - Carmichael is marching to his 15th consecutive National moto win, not much drama happening behind him as Ferry, LaRocco, and Tortelli are all spread out...Coppins is about 3 seconds back of Tortelli, with Lusk trailing closely...then it's waay back to Reynard and Lewis...
Lap 13 - Carmichael leads Ferry by 9 seconds...
Lap 14 - Carmichael, Ferry, LaRocco, Tortelli, Coppins, Lusk, Reynard, Lewis, Plotts, Wey, Roncada, Voss, Dowd, Ramsey, Clark, Roy, Lamson, Povolny, Crine, Brandes, Stiles, K. Johnson, Riddle, Stratton, Silva, Sandell...
Lap 15 - The 2-lap card is out, Carmichael leads Ferry by 8 seconds, most of the top riders are very spread out...Voss, Dowd, and Ramsey are running the tightest battle, for 12th...
Lap 16 - White flag / last lap...Carmichael in control, Ferry firmly 2nd, and LaRocco 3rd...that's the way they cross at the finish, followed by Tortelli, Coppins, Lusk, Reynard, Lewis, Plotts, Wey, Roncada, Dowd, Voss, Wey, Cooper, Ryan Clark.
250 Moto 1 Results: (Official): 1. Ricky Carmichael (Hon); 2. Timmy Ferry (Yam); 3. Mike LaRocco (Hon); 4. Sebastien Tortelli (Hon); 5. Josh Coppins (Hon); 6. Ezra Lusk (Kaw); 7. Lap 4. Stewart unable to shake loose Jesseman, and the Suzuki rider is hunting for a way back past Bubba...Stewart's protecting his lines...if they keep slowing each other up, Larry Ward is going to be right there to complicate matters...Stewart still holding off Jesseman as they work their way around, Ward is on the same pace as Jesseman...

Lap 8 - Jesseman still tring to get close enough to Stewart to try another pass, but Stewart has placed just enough distance over to Suzuki rider to be able to focus on the track ahead...Walker still cutting small bits of time out of the gap to Jesseman, but he's about 6+ seconds back...Reed is about 4 seconds back in 4th, and has about 2 seconds over Ward...
Lap 9 - Stewart, Jesseman, Walker, Reed, Ward, Byrne, Fonseca, Smith, Antunez, Preston, Pingree, Gosselaar...we're at the 20-minute point in the moto...
Lap 10 - Stewart with 3.68 seconds on Jesseman, then Walker; Reed's still not much closer to Walker yet...Stewart is able to keep an eye on Jesseman as they cross back & forth around the course...

Smith, Fonseca, Byrne (now getting pressure from Antunez), Preston, Pingree, Short, Huffman...Townley's day just went downhill, as he came around with the banners attached to his bike, had to shake them loose...meanwhile, Stewart has pretty much shaken Jesseman loose as he keeps the Suzuki rider at bay...

[250cc Moto Two]

Last moto of the day...and the last holeshot of the day is taken by Ricky Carmichael, followed by Voss, Lusk, Wey, Cooper, and LaRocco...Lusk makes the pass for 2nd, relegating Voss to 3rd...then we have Lewis, Ferry, and Coppins...
Lap 2 - Carmichael's trying to check out, and Lusk is trying to not let him do that...3.5 seconds between them, we'll see if Lusk can take a turn at keeping Carmichael in sight this moto...Ferry is trying to get around Voss, makes the pass...behind them it's LaRocco, Wey, Coppins, Tortelli, Reynard, and Cooper...
Lap 3 - Tim Ferry, recovering from a bad start has been moving foward, and is lining up Lusk in his sights...Carmichael's riding his own race, unconcerned in the lead...Voss is holding off LaRocco, then Reynard, Lewis, Coppins and Tortelli form a Honda freight train...Ferry stuffs Lusk back to 3rd...
Lap 4 - Carmichael leads Ferry by 8 seconds, but the Yamaha rider is running the same lap times RC, impressive, but he'll have to do more to cut into that gap...Lusk 3rd, pursued by LaRocco, then Voss, Lewis, Totelli, Coppins, Reynard, and Ramsey all one big red blur...
Lap 5 - Carmichael leads Ferry by 9.168 seconds as they go by, the good race is between Lusk and LaRocco, the Honda rider getting ready to move past Yogi...those two are way ahead of the Voss/Tortelli battle...
Lap 6 - Carmichael, Ferry, Lusk (barely) over LaRocco, Tortelli, Voss, Reynard, Ramsey, Coppins, Lewis, Wey, Plotts, Cooper, Lamson, Clark, Stiles, Dowd, Roy, Brandes, Keith Johnson, and Wallace...RC leads Ferry by 9- seconds...
Lap 7 - Carmichael, Ferry way out front, LaRocco has now moved past Lusk into 3rd...after them, it's about 9 seconds back to Tortelli leading that big Honda conga line...Mark Wondreck has been named as the winner of the SBS "Break" of the Day award winner...
Lap 8 - Carmichael takes a look behind him, checks the gap back to Ferry that we can measure as 11.8 seconds, then LaRocco's another 9 seconds back, with 3 seconds ahead of Lusk...LaRocco's running about 1 second a lap faster than Ferry at the moment, may not be enough to reach him by the finish...
Lap 9 - Carmichael is methodically putting his 16th consecutive moto win and 8th consecutive overall 250 National victory into the record books...the top seven are very spread out...
Lap 10 - Carmichael, Ferry, LaRocco, Lusk, Tortelli, Ramsey, Reynard, Coppins, Voss, Lewis, Wey, Lamson, Cooper...
Lap 11 - LaRocco's actually running the fastest right now, but he's only "hundredths" quick than Carmichael and Ferry ahead of him, they're all in the 2:16 range...
Lap 12 - Carmichael leads Ferry by 13.5 seconds, considerable improvement for RC's competition compared to the past couple rounds where he's been 30 to 40 seconds ahead at the finish...best race going on right now is between Reynard, Coppins, Voss, and Lewis all battling for the 7th place position...
Lap 13 - Carmichael leads by 14.5 seconds, with Ferry about 9 seconds over LaRocco...
Lap 14 - The 2-lap sign is shown to the riders, Carmichael, Ferry, LaRocco, Lusk, Tortelli, Ramsey, Reynard, Coppins, Lewis, Lamson, Voss, Roy, Cooper, Clark, Plotts...
Lap 15 - White flag / last lap...Carmichael has lapped his way through 18th place, and barring any freak occurrences, will come across with his 16th consecutive 250 moto victory and 8th National MX win...he's followed across by Ferry (who'll also be 2nd overall), LaRocco (also taking 3rd overall), then Tortelli, Ramsey, Reynard, Coppins, Lewis, Lamson, Voss, Roy, Cooper.
