Red Bud Pre-Race Notes:
Welcome to Round Six of the AMA / Chevy Trucks U.S. Motocross Championships presented by Dunlop Radial Rover Light Truck Tires, at the 29th Annual Red Bud National MX from Buchanan, Michigan, locally sponsored by Yamaha and M&M Cycle.
The Ritchies and their crew have done a phenomenal job prepping the track for this weekend, adding sand throughout the circuit and grooming/watering it to perfection...many of the turns have multiple lines, and there are three major jumps around the course, including the famous "LaRocco's Leap" giant uphill triple jump. Clearing LaRocco's Leap, once a feat reserved by only the most fearless 250 riders, was also conquered Saturday by a number of 125 pilots, including Michael Byrne, James Stewart, Josh Demuth, Scott Sheak, Ivan Tedesco, Danny Smith, Branden Jesseman, Chad Reed, Brock Sellards, Ernesto Fonseca, and Mike Brown.
Weather for the weekend is forecast for warm and sunny in the mid- to high 80's with around 40% humidity.
Red Bull/KTM's Grant Langston will be away for at least one more month; his knee is improving, but not yet ready for battle...Denso/Simple Green/Pro Circuit Kawasaki's Mike Brown will give it a shot this weekend, and will attempt to race with his recently-scoped and rehabbed knee; if it's still not right, Brown may be done with his season; other Pro Circuit teamsters riding this weekend will be Eric Sorby and Matt Walker; Bobby Bonds was rumored to be in, but will not race yet....Amsoil/Dr. Martens/Journeys/Factory Connection Honda's Travis Preston was looking at missing Red Bud (bad ankle now good, but good ankle now bad) - but, he rode Saturday practice and is "in" for Sunday...
Team SoBe Suzuki's Travis Pastrana will still be out for another month, after his doc ordered him to stay in his navicular arm cast for another month...Stephane Roncada is here, and will give his ankle a try...Team Yamaha's David Vuillemin is back after recovery from a shoulder injury...Team Honda's Nathan Ramsey is back for this weekend, as are Factory Connection Honda's Michael Byrne, and Team Shark/Plano Honda are back in action with Scott Sheak and Casey Johnson.
Ricky Carmichael won the 250cc division here last year; he was a also a 125cc winner at Red Bud in 1998 and '99...RC comes into Buchanan '02 with an unbroken win streak of ten 250cc National moto wins, and a perfect score of 250 points. After Saturday's practice, the fast Floridian set the fastest lap time...Sebastien Tortelli won the 250cc class here in 2000...Larry Ward won the 125cc overall here in 2001...
Team Kawasaki's James "Bubba" Stewart leads Boost Mobile/Yamaha of Troy's Chad Reed by 5 points coming into Red Bud; while the two have traded moto DNF's back at Mt. Morris and Southwick (mechanicals for Stewart and a disclocated shoulder for Reed), Stewart has battled back with three consecutive 125 moto wins to eke out a small lead...Privateer Ryan Clark is back in action; after parting with his prevous sponsor, he's here campaigning his own newly-purchased YZ250, christened with his "Team Solitaire" backing....
Vintage: the very first National winners here, way back in 1974 - Kenny Zahrt won the 125 class on a Bultaco, and Mike Hartwig won the 500 class on a Yamaha.
One-shot deal: Portugese MX/SX champion Paulo Goncalves is here racing this weekend for Team WSA/Snocross/Nielsen Enterprises/Tri-Lube on the #920 Honda. The jack-of-all trades racer says he's only doing Red Bud, and will not be representing Portugal at the MXdN; instead, he plans to race for his country that same week in the International Six Day Enduro.
Hot Laps: Carmichael was blazing the track Saturday, as evidenced by his best practice lap of 2:25.402, nearly 3 seconds faster than the next-best rider, Tim Ferry, with 2:28.095, followed by Sebastien Tortelli with 2:28.181, David Vuillemin with 2:29.146, Mike LaRocco with 2:29.562. The 125 riders were paced by James Stewart at 2:31.509, then Chad Reed at 2:32.212, followed by Ernesto Fonseca with 2:32.447, Larry Ward with 2:32.874, and Mike Brown with 2:33.283.
Fashion Plate: Mike Brown was running the new 2003 Thor gear in practice Saturday.
Musical Contracts: Sebastien Tortelli is said to be close to signing this weekend to ride factory Suzuki for 2003. A big rumor floating around has Jeremy McGrath considering a move for his team to a certain orange-colored Austrian marque. Brandon Jesseman is looking at YoT, Suzuki is looking to wrap up Danny Smith for another year and also to secure Sean Hamblin's services to ride 125 Supercross next year.
Tube Time: Be sure to catch TV coverage of today's Red Bud National on ESPN2, on Saturday, July 13th. The 250cc race will air that day at 12:00PM (noon) EST, and the 125cc race will follow at 1:00PM EST. Repeat times will be at 3:00AM EST on July 17 for the 250cc race, and 4:00AM EST on July 20. Check your local listings.

Lap 4 - Lusk has passed Hamblin to move to 3rd...where's Ferry? - back around 27th...Carmichael's already long gone, Ramsey's still 2nd with Lusk gaining a bit, then Hamblin, Dowd, Lewis...
Lap 5 - Carmichael leads by 15 seconds, Ramsey solid in 2nd, Lusk, then a good race between Dowd, Hamblin and LaRocco looking for a way around both of them...Carmichael's lap times of 2:32 is the only one faster than LaRocco in the 2:35 range...LaRocco passes Dowd to move to 5th, now he's working on Hamblin...
Lap 6 - Carmichael still in the lead with 21 seconds on Ramsey, then Lusk, Hamblin, LaRocco, Dowd, Lewis, Wey, Voss, Roncada, Lamson...LaRocco moves past Hamblin to collect 4th spot, now he'll be heading after Lusk...
Lap 7 - Carmichael still 22+ seconds ahead, Ramsey has about 3+ seconds on Lusk, Dowd, Hamblin, and LaRocco about 1-2 seconds apart each...RC's on full-throttle cruise control, racing it like he rented it...halfway flag is out...
Lap 8 - Lusk is slowly reeling in Remsey, but still not close enought to threaten for 2nd...after them, LaRocco's soldiering forward, also not close enough to do any damage to Lusk yet...then it's about 6.5 seconds back to Hamblin, as Dowd tries to keep the Suzuki rider honest...then Lewis is being pursued by Wey...
Lap 9 - Ferry's riding his number, running in 14th position...Dowd's trying to move close enough to pass Hamblin back...Ferry has blitzed up to 11th, Tortelli is behind him...Carmichael still leading Ramsey by 26 seconds...

Lap 11 - Carmichael sees the 2-laps remaining signal as he stretches to a 34-second lead, airing it out over the big Red Bud launch pads...Ramsey still riding strong, but LaRocco's relentless, puling away from Lusk and looking to close the gap on his teammate in the closing laps...Carmichael has lapped Tortelli...Ferry has moved his way up to 7th...
Last Lap - Carmichael is shown the white flag, as he whips it past the scoring tables...Ramsey looks to have enough margin on LaRocco to be secure in 2nd, but the two four-stroke Hondas are running closer toward the end; Lusk is still pursuing in 4th, then, Dowd, Hamblin, Ferry, Lewis, Wey, Voss...
Carmichael takes the moto and overall win with a 1-handed salute to the Red Bud crowd, then Ramsey, LaRocco, Lusk, Dowd, Ferry, Hamblin, Lewis, Wey, Voss, Lamson.
