Glen Helen Pre-Race Notes:
Good afternoon, Happy Mothers Day, and welcome to Cycle News Virtual Grandstand for our live, lap-by-lap coverage of the 7th Annual GiantRVRacing.com 125/250 National Motocross, which of course is Round #1 of the 2002 AMA / Chevy Trucks U.S. Motocross Championships, from Glen Helen Raceway Park in San Bernardino, California.
9:15am - 125 Pro Practice is happening right now, the Pro Heat races (short motos just to get into the show) will be underway around 11:45am, currently the weather is 55 degrees F and clear, temperatures are expected to reach the high 80s by this afternoon. We'll go over some of the happenings & latest updates this morning...be sure to tune in at 1pm PST as the gate drops for the first 125 Pro Moto for our live coverage.
Injury Report: (special thanks to TFS' Steve Bruhn)
Racing Today: Travis Pastrana, Robbie Reynard, Michael Byrne (rode the 125 class at Vegas already), Rodrig Thain, Steve Lamson, Guy Cooper (running #540 number plate on a KTM 540), Tim Ferry, Heath Voss, Grant Langston (just renewed his contract with KTM for 2 more years after entertaining an offer to ride for factory Suzuki in '03), Michael Brandes, Casey Johnson, David Pingree (one race privateer KTM deal, maybe more).
Not Racing Today: Billy Laninovich, Shae Bentley, Ben Riddle, LaRocco (tried to practice on Thursday, couldn't run at race pace for a long period of time, too much swelling on his injured wrist), Kevin Windham (still out until Mt. Morris or after), Nick Wey (aggravated previous knee injury), Nate Ramsey (concussion from Saturday qualifying crash).
In Saturday's 4-Lap 125 Qualifying race, James "Bubba" Stewart and Chad Reed provided a glimpse of what to expect in today's Pro motos. After passing Chris Wheeler, the two up-and-coming starts went at it tooth & nail the whole race, each having his own better section of the course, with Bubba taking the win just ahead of Reed. The best 125cc lap times recorded by the AMA officials in Saturday's practice were:
Stewart: 2:58.038; Reed: 2:59.157; Langston: 3:01.479; Sorby: 3:01.648; Bonds: 3:02.002; Thain: 3:02.394; Tedesco: 3:02.804; Preston: 3:02.911; Sellards: 3:03.200. On Thursday's press/practice day, Stewart was reported to have turned a lap in the 2:34 range, close to best 250cc times.
Ricky Carmichael appears to have posted the fastest 250cc Saturday lap time, in the high 2:53s. Tortelli and Pastrana were reported to be very fast as well; today will be Pastrana's first race since being out after Daytona due to surgery to have his tonsils removed and to have his sinuses ported.
The much-rumored 250cc Honda 4-stroke is still just that - so far. Some were expecting to see Ernesto Fonseca debut the works bike here at Glen Helen, but the likeable Costa Rican is running a CR125 out of the factory Honda rig - and looking extremely fast. Like many of the top riders, no official practice times are available on the Fonz, since he didn't have to ride the qualifying heats.
The top 10 riders at each round (in this case, the top 10 in points from the 2001 series) are not required to ride the qualifiers, and are seeded directly into the 2 main motos for Sunday. The same goes for any former National Champions, such as Guy Cooper. The 11th through 20th riders in points ride the Sunday morning qualifiers, and those who are lower than 20th in points rode the qualifiers that were held on Saturday.
Looking back:
Previous 250cc National MX winners here at Glen Helen include Tim Ferry (2001), Ricky Carmichael (2000), Sebastien Tortelli (1999), Michael Pichon (1998), Jeff Emig (1997), Jeremy McGrath (1996), and Mike LaRocco (1993).
Previous 125cc National MX winners at Glen Helen include Grant Langston (2001), Stephane Roncada (2000), Ricky Carmichael (1999, '98, '97), Kevin Windham (1996), and Doug Henry (1993).

The National Anthem has been played, and the riders are taking one sighting lap before they grid for the first 125 National moto of the season...
30 minutes plus 2 laps await the 125 riders...engines are revving, the 30-second board is up...the AMA official drops the board sideways and sprints out of the way...the gate drops, and the holeshot goes to Grant Langston...Stewart moves into 3rd right away...Mike Brown is down, gets up and comes around in last...Langston, Stewart, Sellards, Pingree, Reed, Smith, Huffman, Sheak, Preston, Walker, Bonds cross the line at the end of the first lap.
James Stewart has moved into the lead, slipping past Langston on the back section, followed now by Sellards, Reed, Danny Smith, Pingree, Sheak, Walker, and Huffman. Langston is just about 1.5 seconds behind Stewart...Mike Brown has picked up about 5 or 6 positions, still a long way to catch up...Sorby is running behind Brown in the back group.
Lap 4 - Stewart leads Langston by about 3 seconds, then it's Reed in 3rd...
Lap 5 - Running order is Stewart, Langston, Reed, Sellards, Smith, Pingree, Sheak, Preston, Walker, Bonds, Huffman...
No change at the very front, Stewart, Langston and Reed run 1-2-3; after that, Danny Smith is putting tremendous pressure on Sellard in pursuit of the 4th place spot...Sellards is holding the spot, barely...Stewart is leading by some 6.5 seconds...
Mike Brown has moved up to 18th after 7 laps...Chad Reed is closing up on Langston, picking up about 2 seconds this past lap on the leaders...
Beginning of Lap 8 - Steward leads Langston, pressure from Reed about 5 bike lengths back now, then quite a long way back to the next group...Reed gets within 2 bike lengths of Langston, close enough to start looking for alternate lines to get around...the course is getting heavily grooved in already, and these two GP veterans are battling for the 2nd place spot...
Lap 9 - Stewart continues to lead by 9 seconds, Reed is cutting faster laps, tries to knife inside Langston, doesn't make it stick...Langston doesn't come around right away - Reed has moved into second...Mike Brown has moved into 15th, cutting about the same lap times as the lead group...Reed's solidly in second, Langston is circulating in third...Brown is now showing as a second faster lap time than the leaders, he's getting faster while the leaders are slowing just slightly...Stewart has a 21-second lead...
Lap 10 - Stewart, Reed, Langston, Sellards, Sheak, Brandes, comprise the top 6...Mike Brown is now into 14th place...with Stewart coming around this time, the 2-lap flag did not yet come out, will next lap - it may total out to nearly a 40-minute moto by the time the riders complete their extra 2 laps at the end, and the fittest riders will be certain to show...
Lap 11 - Stewart continues to lead as he's shown the 2-lap flag...leading Reed by some 22 seconds...Langston 3rd, then Sellards, Bonds, Preston, Fonseca, Walker, Huffman, Tedesco, Pingree, Brown, Gosselaar...
Bubba Stewart is shown the white flag, one lap remaining...Reed, Langston spread out...Sellards solid in 4th, Smith, Bonds...Brown up to 12th now...
The checkered flag comes out, and the winner of the first 125 National Moto is 16-year-old James Stewart, followed by Chad Reed, Grant Langston, Brock Sellards, Danny Smith, Bobby Bonds.

The 250 Pros are taking their sighting lap - and the track is something to see...some of the grooves through the corners are knee- and waist-deep, making for some unorthodox moves when the riders negotiate them at speed.
Ricky Carmichael nails the holeshot to lead the way out of the gate, followed by John Dowd on the KTM 520...Tortelli and Vuillemin move up, Dowd's back to 4th as they complete the first lap...Tony Amaradio and Keith Johnson collided coming down the big hill - spectacular crash, both got up and continued after finding their bikes...
Lap 2 - Carmichael already is trying to leave the pack behind, 3.5 seconds ahead of Tortelli going up Mt. St. Helens...Tortelli moving along in pursuit, then Vuillemin, Roncada, Ferry, Dowd...
Lap 3 - Carmichael commands a 5 second lead over Honda teammate Tortelli, after that it's about 10 seconds back to Vuillemin, after that it's Roncada, Ferry, Dowd, Lusk, Hamblin battling with Pastrana who's back in today, riding in the 2nd moto...Carmichael leads by 4 seconds...
Lap 4 - Pastrana passed Hamblin to work into the 8th spot...
Lap 5 - Carmichael blast through a little Glen Helen dust tornado to cross the line with a comfortable cushion, Tortelli still about 4 to 5 seconds back...Vuillemin's alone in 3rd, Ferry passed Roncada for 4th...Lusk 6th, Dowd, Pastrana, Lewis, Hamblin...
Lap 6 - Carmichael and Tortelli lead by a long way, then Vuillemin looking back at Ferry moving up on him, Roncada all alone in 5th, Lusk looking good & trying to catch, then Dowd, Pastrana, and Lewis running close together...
Lap 7 - Carmichael is in control with a 31 second lead; Tortelli fell briefly and remounted in 2nd, didn't lose a spot, but allowed Vuillemin and Ferry to close up the gap, making for a race for third to keep an eye on...it's a dogfight now between that trio as the halfway flag comes out for the next pass by the 250 riders...
Lap 8 - Only 3 seconds behind Tortelli are Yamaha teamsters Tim Ferry (now 3rd) and Vuillemin in 4th...Carmichael has a 35 second lead...Ferry moves up to challenge Tortelli for 2nd...
Lap 9 - Running order Carmichael, Ferry now in 2nd, Tortelli 3rd, Vuillemin 4th, Roncada, Lusk, Lewis, Dowd, Pastrana, Reynard, Roy, Johnson, Carpenter, Lamson, Decker, Smail, Lange, Ryan Clark, Cooper, Israel, Campbell, Roth...Carmichael has lapped up to that point so far...
Lap 10 - Carmichael leads, Ferry is still 2nd but with his hands full as Tortelli tries to reclaim the spot...Tortelli tries to pass at the top of the mountain, Tortelli tries to pass, Ferry shuts the door...Vuillemin, Roncada, Lusk, Lewis, Dowd, Pastrana, Reynard make the top 10...Carmichael leads by 35+ seconds...Tortelli retakes the 2nd place spot from Ferry...
Lap 11 - Carmichael is shown the 2-lap signal, as he anticipates his first 250cc National MX overall win of the season...if he wins the overall today, he will have a total of 69 combined 125/250 MX & SX wins, just one short of Bob Hannah's total of 70 wins...(the leader of that stat is Jeremy McGrath, with 89 total wins). Running order right now is 2 Hondas, 2 Yamahas, 2 Kawasakis...
Ricky Carmichael sees the white flag come out as he begins to celebrate with a nearly 40-second lead...Tortelli 2nd, then Ferry, Vuillemin, Lusk, Roncada, Dowd, Lewis, Roy...
The 2nd moto and overall win goes to Ricky Carmichael as he leaves with the 250 point lead...next across the line are Sebastien Tortelli, Tim Ferry, David Vuillemin, Ezra Lusk, Stephane Roncada, John Dowd, Kyle Lewis, Jean Sebastien Roy, and Robbie Reynard making the moto top 10. The overall top 3 for for the day will be the same as they finished this moto - Carmichael, Tortelli, Ferry.
