| Glen Helen Pre-Race Notes: |
Welcome to Cycle News' live Virtual Grandstand coverage (sponsored exclusively by Yamaha) of the 9th annual Giant RV AMA 125/250 Motocross Nationals at Glen Helen Raceway in San Bernardino, California...the 12th and final round of the AMA Chevrolet US Motocross Championship series.
So - on one hand, there's not much left to do, at least for the guys who've already wrapped up their championships.
Team Kawasaki's James Stewart clinched the 125 title two races ago after the first moto at Broome-Tioga MX in Binghamton, New York.Broome-Tioga. One week later at Steel City MX in Delmont, Pennsylvania, Stewart placed himself into the record books as the winningest 125 rider in AMA Pro Racing history. This weekend at Glen Helen is Bubba's last race in the 125 class before he moves up to the big-bores, and he's switching things up by running the four-stroke factory KX250F for his first time.
Team Honda's Ricky Carmichael clinched his fifth consecutive 250 AMA National Motocross Championship last weekend at Steel City, and even he is pleasantly suprised he's made it to the final round with another perfect outdoor season about to be wrapped up. 11 races down, 22 motos unbeaten since missing the 2004 Supercross season and returning to form after knee surgery - this will also be RC's last race on the big red Honda CR. As a way of showing his appreciation to the team that has supported his efforts since 2003, Ricky will trade in his trademark #4 and carry the #1 on the number plates in his last race here at Glen Helen for American Honda.
In Saturday practice, Carmichael and Stewart posted the fastest overall practice times. Here are the top riders' times yesterday: Carmichael 2:34.783; Stewart 2:38.254; Reed 2:38.707; Rodrigues 2:42.723; Tortelli 2:43.346.
So how is it? Hot.
Today's weather is expected to be very warm, with highs in the low to mid-90s; the only consolation to the riders will be that the humidity is expected to decrease to around 30% by the time the main motos get underway. The Glen Helen track crew have done an excellent job whipping the course into shape, making maximum use of the massive up- and downhills, adding some large whoops out back in the "Bud's Creek" section, widening the choppy straight section in front of the Parts Unlimited hospitality area, rebuilding & reshaping the big "log cabin" tunnel jump near the start section, and widening & grooming the unique giant "Talladega" bowl-shaped first turn.

Off-road legend Ty Davis entered today's 250 class in an attempt to qualify for the big show; unfortunatly, the Montclair Yamaha/Moose/Oakley/Race Tech rider finished 20th in the 2nd qualifier; he'll have one more shot in the LCQ, and you gotta give the guy a lot of credit for giving it a shot...
Results of Sunday's 125 Last Chance Qualifier (LCQ) - top 4 transfer: 1. Justin Keeney (Kaw); 2. Sean Collier (Hon); 3. Jeremy Chaussee (Yam); 4. Matthieu Lalloz (Hon).

How cool is that? Ty Davis made it into the main motos!
Not today: Mike Alessi who stepped it up big-time to redeem the hype that was promised in his debut season last weekend with an overall podium finish in the 250 race last weekend at Steel City, clipped a tree practicing at his home track in Hesperia during the week, and will not ride his KTM debut as planned this weekend. Neither will Jeremy McGrath, who collected enough points last weekend in Delmont to retain his career #2 number...he's attending his wife Kim's class reunion in Colorado. Both riders are making plans for 2005.

We're back after the short break as Glen Helen celebrates its 30th anniversary of motorsports racing at the San Bernardino facility...the 125 riders are on their sighting lap...
The 30 second board goes sideways, the riders' elbows are up, visors down, the AMA official sprints out of the way, the heavy metal gate slams backward down to the concrete starting launchpad, and the 2nd 125 moto holeshot today goes to James Stewart on the 4-stroke Kawasaki, he's chased by Tedesco, Walker, Hepler, Ramsey, and Schnell...Hepler crashes hard at the end of the rough straightaway, he's still staying down as the pack roars off into the distance...Hepler's holding his left arm as he's escorted off the track...

Lap 9 - Stewart's running in the 2:48s up front, about 3 seconds a lap faster than Tedesco, resulting in a 42-second lead by now...as the laps are winding down, it'll be a matter of physical conditioning between Tedesco, Gosselaar and Ramsey to see how the podium spots will shake out...Gosselaar now getting a comfortable margin over Ramsey, still attempting to charge in the final laps of the 2nd moto...

Lap 7 - While Lewis continues to hold off Tortelli in the battle for 3rd, the race for 5th is not far behind as Fonseca keeps holding off Windham and Rodrigues for now...Carmichael not really pouring any more salt on the wounds of the rest, still about 17 seconds ahead of Reed - kinda like how people in California reason it's not so bad now when gas dips below $2 per gallon...
Lap 8 - While Rodrigues has been working on a way to get back around Windham and Fonseca, Nick Wey has crept up from behind and is now in position to make a move; Fonseca's running 5th, Windham 6th, Rodrigues 7th, and Wey 8th...

Lap 11 - Carmichael is shown the 2-lap card...the next 2 laps will see a couple of the battles tighten up...Wey comes up behind Fonseca, and makes his move for 6th, gets into that spot...
Lap 12 - White flag, last lap as Carmichael eases his way around the Glen Helen track to head into the history books as the first and only rider to ever have a perfect season in outdoor national motocross, and now to go into the books with a second one with a feat that just a few years ago, would have been considered an impossible accomplishment...the crowd applauds the champ as the crosses the line to mark his second perfect season, taking the 2nd moto win, and today's overall victory...across the line, it's Chad Reed 2nd and 2nd overall, and Tortelli 3rd and 3rd overall.
