Binghamton Pre-Race Notes:

Welcome to Cycle News' live Virtual Grandstand coverage (sponsored by Yamaha) of round #10 of the AMA Chevrolet Motocross Championship series from Broome-Tioga Sports Center in Binghamton, New York.

Complete coverage of today's MX National will be found in next week's Cycle News issue #34. Subscribe right here on Cycle News Online, or pick up your Cycle News at your favorite motorcycle retailer.

It's soggy. The Broome-Tioga track and surrounding areas are saturated, with recent rains maxing out the ability of the ground to soak up any more moisture. Saturday's practice sessions and qualifiers were not held, leaving Sunday to run an extra-full slate of activity.

Today's forecast offers a break, with sunny skies and highs forecast in the low 70s. Sunday morning's practice sessions helped bring the track into racing shape, with deep berms and grooves lining the entire course.

Kawasaki's James Stewart is poised to deliver the 2004 125 National Championship; all he needs to do is finish 2nd in either moto, and he will be the owner of the title.

Suzuki's bomber Mark Barnett won the first two 125 Nationals ever held at Binghamton in 1980 and 1981, as he was racking up a long-standing record as the 2nd-most winning 125 rider ever. Last weekend, Stewart tied Barnett's 125 career victory record. Who's at the top of that list? None other than Ricky Carmichael. If Stewart wins today, he'll move into a tie with Carmichael at the top of the all-time AMA MX 125 win list.

As the outdoor National MX season enters the final quarter (three rounds remaining, counting today), Team Honda's Ricky Carmichael is marching toward another repeat of the 250 title, and has been clicking off another string of undefeated moto and overall wins for a perfect season so far.

Who's got the Broome broom? Ricky Carmichael has won two 125 Nationals here, first in 1997, and again in 1999; since then, he's been the only rider to stand atop the 250 podium, winning every consecutive year from 2000 through 2003. The only rider to interrupt his domination at Binghamton?...John Dowd won the 125 class here in 1998.

Binghamton sees the re-appearance of John Dowd on his Suzuki, and Jean Sebastien Roy on his Honda, as they return to action in the States, now that the Canadian MX Nationals have wrapped up. Dowd holds a place of honor here at Binghamton, winning the 250 National here 10 years ago in 1994. Dowd also won the 250 National here in 1997.

Out, Out, and Still Out: Amsoil Chaparral Honda rookie Josh Grant suffered a concussion in a hard get-off last weekend at Millville, and will miss this weekend. Ditto for Mach 1 Yamaha vet Ezra Lusk, whose return from injury has been delayed by hardware issues - hardware being troublesome screws in his leg coming loose recently. Both riders expect to be back on track at the next round for Steel City.

In: Team Yamaha's Chad Reed and suffered a DNF'd moto at Millville, losing valuable title points after getting clocked by Team Suzuki's Sean Hamblin in an unfortunate collision over a blind jump. Both riders are back in and racing today.

No Hype: After a mixed-review debut at Millville, newcomer Mike Alessi is not at Binghamton this weekend. The young phenom is expected to race next either at Steel City, and/or at the final round at Glen Helen. Alessi is said to be finalizing contract talks with KTM for next year.

The Others: Rookie rider Kyle Partridge finished 38th overall last weekend in his Millville debut, and is racing today. So is Nick Evennou who's making his Pro debut here at Binghamton. Partridge is already set with sponsorship from sponsorship from American Suzuki; Evennou is unsigned with any major sponsors so far.
