| Spring Creek Pre-Race Notes: |
Welcome to Cycle News' live Virtual Grandstand coverage of the Scott USA National Motocross from Spring Creek Motocross Park in picturesque Millville, Minnesota. This weekend marks Round #9 of the 12-round AMA Chevrolet Motocross Championship series; our live web coverage is sponsored exclusively by Yamaha.
Be sure to subscribe to Cycle News (call 800-831-2220 or sign up right here on our web site), or pick up next week's Issue #33 at your local motorcycle dealer - that one will have complete coverage of the Spring Creek National, including all the behind the scenes details and colorful images from the racing action.
Normally, Millville is known for being hot and humid on this annual August weekend. Instead, conditions are relatively mild, with high temperatures through Sunday in the mid-70s.
The track isn't any easier, though. In fact, Millville's famous whoop section (the long version) is back again this year, so is the big "horseshoe escalator" step-up jump in the middle of the track's uphill area. And, the Spring Creek crew have enhanced the big jump before the finish line turns, developing that into an over 100-foot long stepaway tabletop jump.
Spring Creek promoters John & Greta Martin have been making some serious capital improvements to the Millville facility, including a new 3-story "Comfort Zone" building on the infield vendor area near the first turn. That's open to the public with an optional ticket that gets 'em indoor air-conditioned viewing, catered food, and four suites for private viewing & rentals.
Millville marks the debut of Honda phenom Mike Alessi in the Pro ranks. It's hard to remember when there has been so much buzz and hype generated by a rider before their first professional race. Alessi ran competitive lap times during Saturday's practice and qualifying race. Only one week ago, Alessi was announced as the AMA's Horizon Award winner after nabbing his final two amateur championships at the Loretta Lynn's AMA Amateur Motocross Championships, tying James Stewart all-time record of 11 titles at that annual classic event. And, instead of making the customary entry into the 125 class, Mike Alessi raised a lot of eyebrows by going directly into the premier 250 class. Recent statements that he's expecting to finish very high in his first race - podium or better - have only stirred up the level of interest in his weekend here. On Friday, we asked dad Tony how his son is handling the pressure of his first pro race, he said simply, "He's ready...he's a warrior."
The Alessi family has been living near the track for the past few months, practicing here often, getting used to the summer weather, and generally preparing for this race in every possible way, leaving nothing to error or chance.
Saturday saw Alessi handily dominate his pre-qualifying race. That earns him a right to ride the Sunday morning qualifier with the non-seeded riders. Assuming he makes it through that in good shape, then he'll be ready to line up for the main 250 motos later Sunday.
Here are the results from the two 250cc Qualifier races held Saturday...1st Qualifier went 1. Mike Alessi (Hon); 2. Brad Modjewski (Suz); 3. Rodrig Thain (Suz). 2nd Qualifier went 1. Rusty Holland (Hon); 2. Justin Buckelew (Hon); 2. Ross Martin (Suz). No 125cc Qualifiers were held Saturday.
So far, Alessi's lap times have been respectable for any first-time Pro, but with the track full of privateers to run with, he's been about 7 seconds off Carmichael and Reed's best Saturday times. It'll be interesting when the final practice times are posted late Sunday morning on the AMA's live lap time charts to see where he'll stand relative to the seasoned veterans here at Millville.
Red Bull/KTM rider Ryan Hughes was claimed by the whoop section in Saturday's Pro practice session, suffering a broken arm and now most likely out for the remainder of the Nationals.
More Fresh Faces: Alessi's debut here has somewhat overshadowed the appearance of a couple other notable young riders making their transitions from the fast-track amateurs into the Pro ranks. Millville marks the first entry into the 125 class of Las Vegas' Kyle Partridge, riding a factory-backed Suzuki RMZ250, and also of Matt Goerke, who's entering right into the 250 class this weekend, on a Motoworld Suzuki RM250.
Leaderboard: The current point standings (after Washougal / prior to Millville)in the 250 Class are:
1. Ricky Carmichael (400/8 wins); 2. Chad Reed (340); 3. Kevin Windham (317); 4. David Vuillemin (256); 5. Michael Byrne (211); 6. Nick Wey (182); 7. Ernesto Fonseca (181); 8. Heath Voss (157); 9. Tim Ferry (142); 10. Sean Hamblin (127).

Hands up for all those who spotted right away that James Stewart's best practice lap is nearly half a second faster than the fastest 250 class rider. On a hilly, sandy, long track. On a two-stroke Kawasaki KX125. As photo ace TFS' Steve Bruhn would say..."Sheeesh!"
