| Red Bud Pre-Race Notes: |
Welcome to Cycle News' live Virtual Grandstand coverage of the Scott USA National at Red Bud, presented by Concept Haulers...this is Round #5 of the AMA Chevrolet US Motocross Championships.
By the way - happy 4th of July! The Ritchie family and their capable crew have celebrated their 30th anniversary National by changing it up a bit on the Red Bud Track n Trail course. The entire north section of the pro track has been re-designed. LaRocco's Leap - quite possibly the coolest jump in the sport of motocross - is still there, but following that is a new large tabletop jump and a new Millville-like sand-whoops section added in just before the S-section preceding the finish line. The Whoop-monster would be proud...
So what's it like?
Feels like Florida. Kinda warm and humid, with scattered thunderstorms forecast throughout the weekend. If it doesnt' completely dump, the track conditions should be perfect for the National. And the monsoon happens overnight...we're all probably overdue for a good mud race.
Sunday morning saw the riders hit the track a little bit muddy, and it's looking to be overcast, still threatening rain throughout the day.
Since it's so Florida-like, it should be no surprise how strong the riders from there look already...Carmichael, Reed, Stewart, Ferry, Brown (not from FL, but riding & training there with RC a lot lately) - all strong.
In & Out: Team Suzuki's Sean Hamblin had a rude interruption to his string of recent strong finishes; the 21-year-old "Hambone" dislocated his elbow-bone in the first moto at Budd's Creek, two weeks ago, and decided to sit out Red Bud to allow it to heal properly. The big yellow machine's Sebastien Tortelli returns to action on his factory RM250 after a long layoff. In the 125s, Suzuki's Branden Jesseman will also be back into the mix.
Tortelli had a tough day on Saturday. This being his first race back, he had to race yesterday's qualifiers to make it into the main Sunday motos. In the first Saturday race, Tortelli damaged a wheel and DNF'd that one, sending him to the LCQ. The last chance went better, and the likeable Frenchman is indeed in today's race.
Why No Rhino?...Red Bull KTM rider Ryan Hughes was noticeably absent from Saturday's practice, and his #105 bike was not seen in the team truck. Sources say the tough-as-nails Hughes broke a toe a few days ago, and is unable to ride...
Who owns Red Bud? (Well, besides the Ritchie family)...Hands-down, Ricky Carmichael. He aced the 125 class here in 1998 and 1999, then started a consecutive 3-year sweep of the 250 class in 2001-'02-'03. Jeff Emig won three years in the 125 class from 1992 through 1994, and went on to win the 250 class in 1996 and 1998. Mike Kiedrowski claimed the 250 classes in 1992 through 1994. No rider has won the 250 class 4 times here, yet...
It was 30 years ago today...the first National winners here, way back in 1974, were Kenny Zahrt on a Bultaco in the 125 class and Mike Hartwig in the 500 class on a Yamaha. The first year they raced 250s at Red Bud was 1976, when Bob Hannah showed up and won in his debut year on a Yamaha.
TV Time: ESPN2's coverage of the Red Bud National is scheduled to air on Saturday, July 10th at Noon to 1pm EST for the 125s, and 1pm to 2pm for the 250s. Both shows will repeat on Thursday, July 15th at 2am to 3am EST for the 125s, and 3am to 4am EST for the 250s.
Today's racing will start at 1pm EST.
