Hangtown MX Classic Pre-Race Notes:

Welcome to Cycle News Online's live Virtual Grandstand coverage of Round #1 of the AMA Chevrolet Motocross Championship from the 36th Annual Hangtown Motocross Classic at Prairie City SVCR near Sacramento, California...this weekend's event is promoted by the Dirt Diggers Motorcycle Club, presented by Off-Road Outlets and sponsored by Honda.

With the change in the series dates making Hangtown the opening round, the Dirt Diggers look to have a record-setting crown on their hands today. The hillsides are packed all the way around the facility, making today look rather "Euro" with the return to the outdoors as the dirt ribbon track threads its way up and down and around the masses.

The Dirt Diggers have certainly earned their name, putting in an enormous amount of work on the track in the past several months resulting ain a relocated starting gate (now just under and in front of the announcing tower) and some refinements with added turns and sections of the course. Another significant change to the Hangtown starting gate is the return from the old pavement launch pad to natural dirt.

The Hangtown Motocross Classic will be a fitting name for today's racing - the weather is looking perfect - 68 degrees in the morning, fair skies, with a predicted 80 degree high temp this afternoon. The Dirt Diggers have watering crews surrounding the course and are planning to keep it in optimum racing conditions all day.

TV Time: Today's Hangtown MX National will air on ESPN2 Saturday, May 22nd from Noon to 1pm EST (125 Class) and 1pm to 2pm EST (250 Class), with a repeat airing on Friday, May 28th from 3 to 4am EST (125 Class) and 4 to 5am EST (250 Class). Don't miss it.

Fast Kid: Josh Grant won the first 125 morning qualifier, which took the top 13 riders (of 29 who lined up) into the main motos later today. Check out who finished behind him: 1. Josh Grant (Hon); 2. Eric Sorby (Kaw); 3. Danny Smith (Yam); 4. Matt Walker (Kaw); 5. Donnie McGourty (Kaw); 6. Derek Costella (Suz); 7. Chris Whitcraft (Yam); 8. Stephane Roncada (Kaw); 9. Ryan Morais (Hon); 10. They have to give it one more shot in the LCQ.

Our live coverage of today's racing will get underway at 1pm PST.

250cc Moto One:

Remember a couple weeks ago when James Stewart raced at the Las Vegas Supercross Final with the old-school Damon Bradshaw replica Fox Racing gear? As the 250s are lining up for their first moto, Carmichael is debuting his return to racing with a similar - but all-red set of the cool old "Spiderweb" pattern Fox gear reminiscent of that era...and of the back of RC's pants is stitched "Seabiscuit", certainly a reference to the movie from last year about the tough old racehorse that would never quit...

It looks like the consensus now is that the left side of the gate is the preferred place to start, as Reed, Langston, Hamblin, Carmichael, Ferry, Vuillemin, and Wey are on that side...

The 250 riders are on the gate...the 30-second board is up...goes sideways, and as the gate drops the first 250 moto holeshot goes to Jason Thomas...Carmichael moves into the lead, the order early is Carmichael, Vuillemin, Windham, Reed, Thomas, and Rusty Holland...

Lap 2 - Carmicheal streaks across the line to lead the second lap, followed by Vuillemin, Windham, Reed, Holland, Thoma, and Stiles, then Langston, Hamblin, Voss, Ferry, Roy, Povolny, Wey, and Clark...Vuillemin sticking right with RC, and Windham and Reed are hanging right with them as well...local hero Rusty Holland is shocking everyone by still holding down 5th...

Lap 3 - Carmichael, Vuillemin, and Windham close in the top 3, Reed only a little bit back, then Holland, Langston, Stiles, Hamblin, and Roy...Windham is getting close enough to Vuillemin to be looking for a way around into 2nd...Vuillmin's trying to do the same on Carmichael...Vuillemin moves closer to RC and a bit ahead of Windham at the moment, while Reed reels in Windham just a bit...Langston moves past Holland to get into 5th...

Lap 4 - Carmichael continues to stry to check out, but Vuillemin's not letting that happen...Windham getting continued pressure from Reed for 3rd...after those two close battles, it's about 12 seconds back to 5th, which is Langston...

Lap 5 - Carmichael leading Vuillemin by about 2 seconds, then Windham and Reed still close...after the gap back to 5th held by Langston, it's Langston, Holland, Roy, Stiles...

Lap 6 - Vuillemin still keeping Carmichael in sight, still about 2 seconds apart, classic race between Windham and Reed for 3rd...Hamblin's up into 5th, ahead of Langston, Holland, and Roy...after that it's Stiles, Voss, Povolny, and Ferry...

Lap 7 - Langston pulls out of the moto...Carmichael has extended his gap over Vuillemin slightly to 3 seconds now...

Lap 8 - Carmichael's now well out ahead of Vuillemin, who now has company in the form of Windham, getting pressure in a race for 2nd, while Reed's only slightly behind in 4th...Windham passes Vuillemin to move to 2nd...Vuillemin takes the spot back, Windham tries an inside move, doesn't work this time...

Lap 9 - Carmichael leads by 13 seconds now, Windham 2nd...Reed passes Vuillemin to move into 3rd...Hamblin running 5th...Reed reels in Windham and now they'll be battling for 2nd...

Lap 10 - Carmichael by 8 seconds ahead of Windham, still holding off a charging Reed, then Vuillemin...Reed goes alongside Windham up the hill, they launch down the big downhill double, and Reed makes the pass for 2nd at the bottom of the hill...Reed puts a couple bikelengths on Windham right away...

Lap 11 - Carmichael leads by 10 seconds, while Windham takes 2nd back away from Reed, those two are going at it...Reed's giving no quarter, ducking roost up the hills and probing for opportunities to pass...Windham takes Reed's line from the lap earlier and holds the position, all eyes are on the battle...

Lap 12 - Still a very close battle for 2nd between Windham currently ahead of Reed, then it's Vuillemin, Hamblin, Roy, Stiles, Holland, Voss, Wey, Povolny, Anderson, and Paget...

Lap 13 - Lappers are becoming a factor, Carmichael unaffected, Windham threading his way through while Reed balked momentarily, allowed Windham to create a small gap over Reed as the laps are winding down...

Lap 14 - Carmichael leads by still 10 seconds, Windham still 2nd and being closely pursued by Reed, then Vuillemin alone in 4th, after that it's Hamblin...Windham and Reed have clear track ahead of them, no more lappers in their way for a little while...

Lap 15 - RC's shown the 2-lap sign by the AMA officials, looks like he'll be sailing to his first moto win aboard the 4-stroke Honda CRF450...We'll find out soon if Reed's been saving anything for Windham in the run to the finish...Vuillemin still running 4th, then Hamblin...

Lap 16 - White flag is shown to Carmichael for the last lap...Windham seems to have added just a bit of space over Reed, but they're both putting out 100% for the final lap, going at it right down to the wire...at the checkers, the first 250 moto win goes to Ricky Carmichael. Windham's 2nd, then Reed, Vuillemin, Hamblin, Roy, Stiles, Voss, Wey, Holland, Paget, Byrne, Huffman, Anderson, Clark.

Lap 11 - Stewart gets a few bikelengths over Roncada, order is Stewart, Roncada, Hepler, Brown...

250cc Moto Two:

Neither Tim Ferry nor Grant Langston are lined up for the 2nd 250cc moto; coincidentally, both riders are nursing hand injuries that'll keep them out for the rest of the day.

So - the holeshot for the 2nd 250 moto will go to Vuillemin followed by Carmichael...then it's Thomas, Hamblin, Anderson...Windham moves his way up to 4th, Reed's up to 6th...Windham moves to 4th...

Lap 2 - As they come by it's now Carmichael (trying to check out, but Vuillemin repeating the 1st moto deal trying to keep RC in sight...Windham moves to 3rd, bringing Reed along with him now in 4th, Hamblin back to 5th...then it's Roy, Anderson, and Huffman...Vuillemin is able to pull Carmichael back, and is beginning to smill blood...

Lap 3 - Carmichael and Vuillemin are once again the class of the class, these two some 7 seconds over Windham, but Windham's coming on strong...Reed still hanging with Windham and the two are making every effort to gain time on Carmichael & Vuillemin...

Lap 4 - Carmichael with -2 seconds on Vuillemin, the Frensh rider works to look for any weak spots in Carmichael's defense...Carmichael is on an aggressive pace, and it may take a mistake on the Honda rider's part before it closes up much...meanwhile, Reed has closed up on Windham and is looking for an opportunity to make his move for 3rd...

Lap 5 - Still about the same 2 seconds apart at the front between RC and DV, but Reed passes Windham to get into 3rd position...Reed immediately puts a couple secoinds over Windham and has a gap of some 12 seconds to cover to bridge the distance up ahead to Reed...

Lap 6 - Running order is Carmichael, Vuillemin, Reed, Windham, Hamblin, Roy, Huffman, Voss, Byrne, Anderson, Paget, Thomas...the closest race at the moment is between Hamblin and Roy for 5th...Keith R. Johnson is out of this moto, as is Joe Oehlhof and Jeff Gibson...

Lap 7 - Carmichael's carrying a 4.5-second lead over Vuillemin at this point, still not much suspense in the top positions...still 12 seconds from Vuillemin back to Reed, but Reed seems to be running fast enough lap times in order to get closer before the end of the race...

Lap 8 - The crossed flags are out signifying the halfway point in the moto, Carmichael continues to lead the way....

Lap 9 - Carmichael 7 seconds over Vuillemin, while Reed has halved the difference between his position and Vuillemin, now just 6 seconds behind him...at this rate, unless Vuillemin picks it up considerably, Reed should be in passing position for 2nd within about 2 to 3 laps...

Lap 10 - Reed's now within 5 seconds of Vuillemin, as the laps wind down that's where the most likely drama will be happening...Reed's running down Vuillemin and can see him in his sights...Vuillemin losing a little more time to Reed, now about 3 seconds apart...

Lap 11 - Carmichael's lead on Vuillemin is a solid 10 seconds and not changing much...Reed's now just 2 seconds behind Vuillemin, and we're about to see some action...the question may not be if or even when Reed passes Vuillemin, but if he gets by, if there's any chance he might be able to cut into Carmichael's significant lead...

Lap 12 - Vuillemin seems to have picked it up a bit now that he sees Reed closing fast...Reed closes it up some more though, only about a second back - oops - and then Reed blew a corner at the bottom of a hill, allowing Vuillemin to get away a bit...Reed recovers and sets back off after him, about 5+ seconds back now...

Lap 13 - Carmichael leads Vuillemin by the same 10 seconds, looks like RC has this one pretty well covered...Vuillemin's maintaining his 5-6 second gap on Reed, there may not be enough time anymore for Reed to catch back up with his Yamaha teammate...

Lap 14 - Running order is Carmichael, Vuillemin, Reed, Windham, Huffman, Hamblin, Roy, Voss, Byrne, Paget, Wey, Clark, Anderson, Thomas...

Lap 15 - Carmichael sees the 2-lap sign, Vuillemin has continued to extend his lead over Reed toward the end of the moto...

Last Lap - White flag is out, Carmichael completes his last time around the Hangtown track today and crosses the line 4+ seconds ahead, to take his 3rd consecutive 250 National MX win here...after that, the finish order is Vuillemin, Reed, Windham, Huffman, Hamblin, Roy, Voss, Byrne, Paget, Wey, Clark. 250 Moto 2 Results (Official): 1.
