| Binghamton Pre-Race Notes: |
Welcome to Cycle News' live Virtual Grandstand web coverage of Round #10 of the 2003 AMA Chevy Trucks U.S. Motocross Series from Broome-Tioga Sports Center, for the 25th consecutive running of the 125-250 Pro Nationals near Binghamton, New York.
Each round of Virtual Grandstand coverage during the 2003 MX National season is sponsored exclusively by Yamaha.
Binghamton, New York is billed as America's Carousel Capitol, and with this weekend's MX circus coming to town, the motocross merry-go-round is in full swing.
Over at the Red Bull KTM truck, French racer Steve Boniface was relieved of his 125 factory ride after a dispute over his refusal to follow team orders with the tiddler title within reach of the Austrian marque. Boniface was suspended by his team last weekend at Millville over the brouhaha, and is now riding for Motoworld Suzuki this weekend, reportedly on the RM125 of re-injured factory SoBe rider Branden Jesseman.
Other silly-seaon rumors have top privateer Nick Wey getting a factory 250 ride with SoBe Suzuki; Ezra Lusk looking at riding for Mach One Yamaha in 2004; Ryan Hughes has re-signed with KTM for 2004 with a Supermoto career to kick in for a couple years after that; Mike Brown going to Yamaha of Troy to ride the 250 Supercross series (on a YZ250) and the outdoor 125 MX Nationals (on a YZ250F); Kelly Smith, who was all but booked to ride a Kawasaki 4-stroke in '04 is said to be staying on Yamahas after all; Craig Anderson's name has been on-again & off-again about whether he is supposed to have another year left on his Yamaha of Troy contract, the latest is that he'll be looking for work. His name has been coming up as a possible contender to ride the new KX250F; Stephane Roncada will be Pro Circuit Kawasaki next year.
Weather - what weather?...conditions this weekend look perfect (not as hot or humid as last weekend). Forecast temps for Sunday have temps in the high 70s with a light breeze.
The track's in excellent shape, and promoter Tom Hurd's crew have put a lot of nice details into what they bill as "America's Greatest Spectator Course". Little things add up to a lot here - there's a large scoreboard alongside the starting chute showing the top 10 riders (by current points) in each class, to be updated after each moto with rider scores & overall results...they've planted fresh flowers along the starting straight...some 90% of the track can be viewed from any number of locations around the course.
The 4th Quarter: This weekend marks the first of the last three races in the 12-round MX National series. The 250 class is not yet decided, but Ricky Carmichael's return to the top of the podium with his win at Millville last weekend left him 63 points ahead of Kevin Windham. With 50 points per race available (25 points per moto), there's plenty of drama yet to unfold.
250 Point Standings (after Millville): 1. Carmichael (432/7 wins); 2. Windham (369/2 wins); 3. Reed (330); 4. Ferry (300); 5. LaRocco (267); 6. Vuillemin (217); 7. Lusk (210); 8. Dowd (190); 9. Fonseca (189); 10. Ward (169).
Speaking of drama, there's been plenty in the 125 class. As alluded to earlier, Red Bull/KTM is beginning to feel they may actually have their first AMA National MX title within their grasp. Grant Langston finished 5th overall at Millville, diminishing a bit of his points advantage over teammate Ryan Hughes. Langston knows his way around Broome-Tioga, having won the 125 race here in 2001. Hughes is pretty much back up to full speed after getting through a number of the earlier rounds with a broken leg, now managing himself to keep from overtraining while coming back. Langston is leading the series without having one a race, while Hughes has one once (at Sacramento). Pro Circuit Kawasaki's Mike Brown (recovering from the separated shoulder he suffered after being accidentally plowed by Hughes at Washougal in a brutal collision) was unable to finish either moto at Millville. Brown won two overalls this year, and is still 3rd in points going into this weekend, but will not be racing any of the remaining rounds, and is effectively done for the season. Which leaves Team Kawasaki's James "Bubba" Stewart.
Bubba has won every moto of the five MX nationals that he's been in since returning to the series after healing a broken collarbone. Each weekend, he's been perfect. Each weekend, his competitors haven't. Each weekend, Stewart does all he knows how to do - win - and if he's in contention for the title by the final race, he'll worry about that then. With a total of 150 points possible for him & his competitors to get between now and the last moto at Troy, Ohio, only his competitors (Langston and Hughes) can be consistent and close enough to the front for one of them to bring it all home for KTM.
125 Point Standings (after Millville): 1. Langston (314); 2. Hughes (298/1 win); 3. Brown (271/2 wins); 4. Stewart (250/5 wins); 5. Sellards (223); 6. Byrne (205); 7. Tedesco (186); 8. Anderson (174/1 win); 9. Sorby (160); 10. Metcalfe (149).
TV Time: Today's 125 racing from Broome-Tioga will be televised on ESPN on Monday, September 1st at 7pm (EST); the 250 class will air on Thursday, September 4th at 11am (EST). Repeats will air on Saturday, Septmber 6th at 3:30am (EST) for the 125 race and 4:30am (EST) for the 250 race.
It's probably no secret that Ricky Carmichael is the winningest rider ever at Binghamton, with 125cc victories in 1997 and '99, and winning here the past three years (2000, '01 & '02) in the 250 class, for a total of five. Kevin Windham's had a nice bite of success here too, winning the 125s in 1996 and the 250s in 1999.
The Rock: How cool is it that Mike LaRocco won two races at Broome-Tioga - the 125 class in 1991 and then the 250 class in 1993? - that was over a decade ago, and the guy's still here, holding down a solid 5th in the current 250 points.
And another pillar of the community has to be Cernic's KTM rider John Dowd, who won the Broome-Tioga 250 National in 1994 and '97, and then won the 125 National in 1998. He's also here, 8th in the 250 point standings going into this weekend, and putting guys half his age to shame. Dowd's entertaining the possiblity of riding Suzukis in the upcoming National Arenacross Series. Unfortunately, the "Junkyard Dog" decided to sit out today's racing in order to let a lingering groin injury heal up.
Mitch can't buy a break: Since Mike Brown and Eric Sorby are out with their respective orthopedic injuries, Pro Circuit enlisted Kawasaki's in-house test rider Craig Decker to ride the 125 class for this weekend...unfortunately, Decker tweaked his knee in this morning's practice session, and is unable to ride as well.
WML Overall Results from Saturday: 1. Steffi Laier 1-1 (KTM); 2. Sarah Whitmore 2-2 (Yam); 3. Tarah Geiger 3-4 (Hon); 4. Tania Satchwell 5-3 (Yam); 5. Sheena Patterson 4-5 (Suz).
Winning Practice: It's no surprise that James Stewart posted the fastest 125cc practice lap times. Chad Reed raised more than a few eyebrows as he posted the fastest 250cc practice time - apparently feeling even more comfortable after switching to the four-stroke YZ450F & finishing 3rd overall last weekend at Millville.

Time to rock & roll...the bikes are revved up, the 30-second board goes sideways, the gate drops, and the first holeshot of the day goes to Grant Langston, followed by James Stewart, Sellards, Tedesco, Brandes, Hughes, Kelly Smith, Maier...Langston gets pushed out & goes down, comes back along around 16th...Stewart's already wheelying off into the sunset, while Sellards runs about 4 seconds back...
Lap 2 - Running order is Stewart, Sellards, Hughes, Brandes, Kelly Smith, Tedesco, Maier, Woods, Short, Byrne, Boniface, Gosselaar, Laughridge, Anderson, Gray...Langston's running 17th, and you know he's gotta be worried about that points lead slipping away...
Lap 3 - Stewart's speed is apparent as he works his way around the Broome-Tioga course...Sellards doesn't have much pressure for the moment, Hughes is working to catch him, but Sellards so far is running a couple seconds faster per lap, we'll see whose conditioning will stand the test as the moto wears on...Kelly Smith is in 4th, then Brandes and Woods...
Lap 4 - Langston is only up to 16th so far; meanwhile, Stewart already is over 13 seconds ahead of Sellards...Hughes has managed to close the gap, and may be in position soon to pressure Sellards for 2nd...
Lap 5 - Stewart, Sellards, Hughes, Kelly Smith, Woods, Brandes, Short, Byrne, Gosselaar, Boniface, Laughridge, Gray, Tedesco, Maier, and Langston...Stewart leads by over 20 seconds now...Hughes continues to pull closer to Sellards...
Lap 6 - Ryan Mills is out, pushing his bike back to the pits...Langston is up to 15th now, but up front, Hughes is still trying to pull within striking distance of Sellards...
Lap 7 - 21 second lead for Stewart; then it's Sellards, Hughes, Kelly Smith, Woods, Short, Byrne, Brandes, Gosselaaar, Boniface, Gray, Laughridge, and now Langston up to 13th...
Lap 8 - Hughes is now working over Sellards, pushing him hard & trying to force a mistake by the 2nd place rider...Sellards knows he's there - Hughes goes around the outside, doesn't make it stick, but they're side by side as they trade lines around the track...
Lap 9 - Tedesco is out of the moto, pulled off...Hughes still chasing Sellards...further back, ex-KTM rider (now Suzuki rider) Boniface is trying to hold off Langston, no longer his job to just let the points leader past...Langston is unfazed and makes the pass into 11th anyway...Stewart is going just un-be-lievably-fast, now with over 30 seconds ahead of Sellards...
Lap 10 - Hughes makes the pass on Sellards to move into 2nd...
Lap 11 - Stewart leads by 33 seconds, after that the order is now Hughes, Sellards, Kelly Smith just holding off Josh Woods - Woods moves into 4th...then it's Short, Byrne, Gosselaar, Brandes, Langston, Gray, Boniface, Lalloz, Hepler, Laughridge...
Lap 12 - Hughes is using the whole track and then some, trying to put some distance on Sellards, no way there's enough for him to relax yet...Stewart leads by 35 seconds...Langston's running in 10th, his pace is about 2 seconds a lap faster than Brandes who's ahead of him in 9th, should be able to catch him in another lap or two...
Lap 13 - Stewart leads by 38 seconds; Hughes finally gets just a bit of cushion over Sellards, roughly 4 seconds...after that, it's about 13 seconds back to Short, followed by Byrne, Gosselaar, Brandes, Langston, Gray, Lalloz, Boniface, Laughridge, and Anderson...
Lap 14 - 41 second lead for Stewart...still no shakeup with the lead positions...
Lap 15 - Stewart is shown the 2-laps remaining sign, he's been into lappers for awhile, now Hughes is encountering the backmarkers as well, but has increased his gap over Sellards to 7+ seconds...Woods still 4th, and he & Kelly Smith are engaged in the only close race among the front riders...
Lap 16 - White flag for Stewart, this one's pretty well tied up for his 11th consecutive moto win, he comes across 46+ seconds ahead of Hughes...Stewart's throwing huge whips over all the big jumps around the track...the finish order is Stewart, Hughes, Sellards, Woods, Kelly Smith, Byrne, Short, Gosselaar, Brandes, Langston, Gray, Lalloz, Laughridge, Anderson, Hepler. Stewart's margin of victory this moto?...54.845 seconds.

250s are lined up on the gate...it slams to the concrete, and the first 250 holeshot of the day goes to Kevin Windham, followed by Casey Clark, Carmichael, Ramsey, Vuillemin, Reed, Lusk, Ferry, Lewis, Fonseca, LaRocco, Roncada...Carmichael jams his way past Clark and then past Windham to move into the lead - the two Honda riders are battling and working to pull ahead, then Vuillemin holds 3rd, followed by Ferry...
Lap 2 - Carmichael and Windham are going at it, the #14 Honda rider going side by side as they take completely different lines all the way around the course and way overjumping the huge Binghamton leaps...Windham keeps showing Carmichael his wheel...
Lap 3 - Carmichael nearly roosts Windham right off the bike coming out of some of the corners, if Windham gets the opportunity to lead it'll hurt even worse coming off the back of that 450...Windham makes the pass - Carmichael crashes! - he remounts after Ferry gets by, just riding ahead of Reed now...Windham steps on it to try to check out while he can...Vuillemin pursues, and Reed is blocking Carmichael, trying to hold him off...
Lap 4 - Windham holds a tenuous 7-second lead with a deep field of talent giving chase...at the past Nationals Windham has won, it's generally happened when he gets a clear track...and he is absolutely flying right now...Windham is not jumping the big downhill triple, neither is Vuillemin - but RC, Reed and Ferry all are doing it...
Lap 5 - Carmichael is about 2+ seconds behind Vuillemin & reeling him in...Windham is putting in smooth, fast, consistent laps...Vuillemin is doing all he can to hold off RC, but that's a thing of the past now as Carmichael outjumps his way into 2nd place...
Lap 6 - There's 10.5 seconds between Windham and Carmichael, there are still 12 minutes + 2 laps to go...order is Windham, Carmichael, Vuillemin, Reed, Ferry, Lusk, Roncada, LaRocco, Ramsey, Fonseca, Lewis, Carpenter, Wey, Johnson, Povolny...Windham's enjoying himself, looking down at the crowd as he launches off the big jumps...
Lap 7 - There's a huge battle a bit farther back for 11th, as Kyle Lewis, Wey, Carpenter, and Keith Johnson are mixing it up...up front, Windham still leads Carmichael by approx. 8 seconds, RC's keeping the wheels on the ground a lot more in an effort to keep driving forward...
Lap 8 - The halfway flag is shown, Windham is still maintaining the same lead as they cross, approx 10+ seconds...Windham is dealing with lappers, may allow Carmichael to pull up a little closer if he's balked at all - many of the corners are very deeply rutted, allowing limited passing choices in certain spots...
Lap 9 - Windham's gap has been slightly whittled down to 9.4 seconds, 10 minutes + 2 laps remain in the moto...order is Windham, Carmichael, Vuillemin, Reed, Ferry, Lusk, Roncada, LaRocco, Ramsey, Fonseca, Lewis, Carpenter, Wey, K. Johnson, Povolny...
Lap 10 - Carmichael continues to gain on Windham, this last go-round bringing the gap down to 8.8 seconds...Windham can see him as they pass each other on alternating corners and seems to have it measured...
Lap 11 - Windham wicks it up just that little bit more, putting the gap over RC back up to 9.6 seconds...
Lap 12 - Carmichael takes that second back, with an 8.9-second deficit to try to reel in Windham, after that Vuillemin is still a lonely 3rd, then Reed, Ferry & Lusk are all pretty spread out - after Lusk though is LaRocco looking to move up to Lusk's 6th place spot...
Lap 13 - Windham still slicing through lappers, maintaining 8+ seconds distance over Carmichael...Vuillemin 3rd, then Ferry, Lusk being chased more closely by LaRocco...still an excellent battle for the 9th spot between Fonseca and Ramsey...
Lap 14 - No change at the front, Windham still marking Carmichael's distance behind in 2nd...then the top pursuers - Vuillemin, Reed, Ferry, Lusk, all spread out, LaRocco still working to get close enough to make a move on Lusk...
Lap 15 - The 2-lap sign is shown...Windham still with 8.8 seconds over Carmichael...
Lap 16 - White flag for Windham showing this as the final lap...Windham roosts his way to the moto win, saluting the crowd...at the flag, it's Windham, followed by Carmichael, Vuillemin, Reed, Ferry, Lusk, LaRocco, Roncada, Fonseca, Ramsey, Carpenter, Lewis, Wey, Kevin Johnson, Voss.

We're back, the 125 pilots are completing their sighting lap...the gate drops, and they're off...the holeshot goes to James Stewart, followed by Sellards, Smith, Woods, Lalloz, Boniface, Adams, Gosselaar, Mills, Byrne, Hughes, Langston, Reynard, Brandes, Mertens...and again - Stewart's already checking out.
Lap 2 - Stewart leads Sellards by 7 seconds, much of this moto looks like the first - crummy start again for Langston - but Hughes is only 1 position ahead of Langston this time, and we should get to watch a heads-up battle between the two KTM teamsters for their championship points...except for Stewart's already untouchable lead, there are excellent battles already all the way through the pack...
Lap 3 - As they come around, Stewart leads by 10 seconds, then it's Sellards, Kelly Smith, Woods, Lalloz, Byrne, Langston - and Hughes has not come around this time - he must be in some kind of trouble up in the trees - after Langston it's Boniface, Adams, Brandes, Gosselaar...Hughes still nowhere in sight...
Lap 4 - Stewart's lead over Sellards is now 15 seconds, Sellards just ahead of Kelly Smith, then 4 seconds back to Woods, closely chased by Lalloz, Byrne and Langston...Hughes is back up, running in 15th...Kelly Smmith doing a good job keeping Sellards close enough to be right there should Sellards make an error...
Lap 5 - Stewart's lead over Sellards is now 17 seconds, the battle for 2nd has added another rider - Woods - who has reeled in Sellards and Kelly Smith...Stewart's sooo fast, it's unbelievable to watch him...
Lap 6 - 19 second lead for Stewart, Sellards and Smith are still battling, pulling out a bit of a gap over Woods...
Lap 7 - Stewart, Sellards, Smith, Woods, Byrne, Langston, Lalloz, Adams, Hughes up to 9th, Mills, Gosselaar, Short, Gray, Owens, Hepler...Kiniry crashes at the bottom of a heavily rutted downhill, he's back up...Hughes just behind Adams & working on getting up to 8th...
Lap 8 - 27 second lead for Stewart...Hughes is all over Adams...Stewart doing huge whips over the big jumps, just flogging the bike all the way around the track...
Lap 9 - Halfway mark in the race...Langston is up to 6th, and Hughes moves past Adams to move him into 7th...running order is now Stewart by 31+ seconds, then Sellards, Kelly Smith, Woods, Byrne, Langston, Hughes, Adams, Lalloz, Short, Gosselaar, Mills, Gray, Hepler, Reynard...
Lap 10 - Stewart's lead is now 34 seconds, there's a great duel between Sellard and Kelly Smith, still racing for 2nd place and just 1+ second apart...Rodgrigues is out of the moto...after that, Josh Woods is in 4th, but getting pressure from Byrne and Langston both right behind him...
Lap 11 - Stewart's lead is 36 seconds...the real drama as the moto winds down will be what happens with KTM rider Josh Woods (currently 4th), who's just 2 positions ahead of Langston, and 3 positions ahead of Hughes...Woods is just holding off Byrne for now, about 1 second ahead of the Honda rider...Langston's all over Byrne, and Hughes is about 15 seconds back after that...
Lap 12 - No change yet, other than Stewart's lead up to 40+ seconds now...
Lap 13 - Byrne hit a kicker, going sideways and almost down, allowed Langston to make the pass into 5th, that puts Langston just about a second behind Woods now...
Lap 14 - Stewart is shown the "2 Lap" sign, Sellards still just ahead of a charging Kelly Smith, then Woods still ahead of Langston then Byrne, and Ryno Hughes railing around, after that it's Adams, Short, Gosselaar, Mills, Lalloz, Gray, Reynard, Hepler...Stewart is already styling for the crowd...
Last Lap - Stewart sees the white flag, then still Sellards and Smith...the KTM crew giving the signal to Woods to let Langston bye...we'll see if it happens...Stewart takes the moto win - total gap at the finish is 51.354 seconds...Langston gets by Woods in the woods...after Stewart, the order goes Smith (Sellards fails to come around on the final lap, after crashing), then it's Langston, Woods, Byrne, Hughes, Short, Gosselaar, Mills, Reynard, Gray, Lalloz, Hepler, Owens, Hansen, Adams.

The 250 riders are gridded into the gate...the gate drops, and the final holeshot today belongs to Carmichael, followed by Windham, Ward, Reed, Thomas, Ferry, Vuillemin, Wey, Lusk, Fonseca, Ramsey, Lewis, Browning, LaRocco, Roncada...three Hondas at the front, Windham swings wide around the outside of RC & they drag race up the big jump/hill...Windham takes the lead!...a group of Yamahas move up, with Ferry, Reed, and Vuillemin displacing Ward...
Lap 2 - Windham & Carmichael just a bikelength apart, they're turning this moto into an instant classic already...Carmichael trying to dodge the 450s severe roost, while the two Honda riders are going at it, Ferry has joing the battle, and here comes Chad Reed as well...
Lap 3 - Carmichael is back in the lead, sweeping under Windham in the turn after the big downhill triple...Carmichael and Windham pull just a couple bikelengths over Ferry, while Reed is still close behind, after that it's Vuillemin, Ward, Lusk, Wey, Fonseca, LaRocco, Thomas...
Lap 4 - Carmichael and Windham rattle their way down the heavy braking bumps, so far Windham has been unable to get back ahead of Carmichael, both riders are running a blazine pace...Ferry somewhat ahead of Reed now, who has a long gap over Ward, holding off Lusk, Wey, LaRocco, and Fonseca...
Lap 5 - The track is tremendously rough now, Carmichael and Windham continue to rail around, well ahead of Ferry...no drama either right now as Reed, Vuillemin pursue, then there's an excellent battle with Ward, Lusk, Wey, and LaRocco, Fonseca about to join them...
Lap 6 - Carmichael begins go develop just a small amount of space over Windham...
Lap 7 - No change up front - the running order is Carmichael (4.2 seconds over Windham), then Ferry, Reed, Vuillemin, Lusk, Ward, Wey, LaRocco, Fonseca, Ramsey, Lewis, Thomas, Carpenter, Roncada...
Lap 8 - Windham hasn't given up by any stretch, Carmichael continues to lead by 4.1 seconds, but not able to develop any devastating gap yet...after Windham it's 12 seconds back to Ferry, then 7 seconds to Reed, same to Vuillemin, 9 seconds to Lusk, who's still got plenty of company just behind with Wart, Wey, and LaRocco, Fonseca hasn't been able to close the 4 second run up to LaRocco yet...
Lap 9 - Windham has only slightly reduced the lead Carmichael has on him, it's now 3.8 seconds...
Lap 10 - Carmichael and Windham are working their way through lappers, 2.9 second lead now being held by RC over K-dub...then Ferry, Reed, Vuillemin, Lusk, Ward, LaRocco, Wey, Fonseca, Ramsey, Lewis, Carpenter, Thomas, Lamson...
Lap 11 - Still 3 seconds apart between the leaders, plenty of racetrack still ahead...Windham keeping Carmichael in sight should the reigning champion make any errors, unless he's holding something in reserve for the final laps...
