Millville Pre-Race Notes:

Welcome to the 21st annual running of the Spring Creek Motocross National from Millville, Minnesota, Round #9 of the 2003 AMA Chevy Trucks National Motocross Series. Each round of Cycle News' Virtual Grandstand live web coverage at the 2003 MX Nationals is sponsored excusively by Yamaha.

This weekend was originally planned to be round #10 of the series, but flooding of the Troy, OH facility back in July has that event re-scheduled to happen as the final round (#12) now, on September 7th...Binghamton, NY will now be Round #10 (with a rebuilt tower after a recent tornado) on 8/24, and Steel City MX at Delmont, PA will be round #11 on 8/31.

The first AMA National MX held at Millville was back in the day when there were 3 classes. Danny "Magoo" Chandler won the 500 class on a Honda, and his teammate "Hurricane" Bob Hannah won the 250 class. The 125s that day were won by Ron Lechien on a Yamaha, who went on to win the 250 class here in '84 and the 125 class again in '85.

But who owns this place? (Besides track owner/operator/NPG member John Martin?)...Ricky Carmichael has collected five of his total record 34 AMA National MX wins at Millville, winning the 125 class in '97 & '98, and sweeping the 250 class here in 2000, '01, and '02.

Team Honda's defending champion Carmichael leads fellow Honda rider Kevin Windham by 47 points coming into this weekend's event. Windham has already taken two overall wins from RC (at the two prior rounds at Unadilla and Washougal), and is on something of a winning streak of his own. Windham has never won an overall at Millville, but there's been plenty of speculation during the recent 3-week break in the series about whether the big 4-stroke 450 he's riding has turned into an advantage now that he's settled into riding it. At the recent races, when Windham has gotten the holeshot, he's turned it into an insurmountable gap. Everyone here is expecting a big battle between these two.

Another twist in the top 250 riders will be Team Yamaha's Chad Reed switching to riding the YZ450F. While Reed managed to beat Carmichael at the last 6 rounds of the Supercross Series, he's so far been unable to match the Honda rider's speed outdoors. Yamaha's Tim Ferry has been showing increasing speed on the YZ450 at some of the recent rounds, and Reed's been getting into the groove with the big thumper during the break.

Points Check: Going into Millville, here's a quick look at the series point standings.

250 Points: 1. Carmichael (382/6 wins); 2. Windham (335/2 wins); 3. Reed (290); 4. Ferry (260); 5. LaRocco (236); 6. Vuillemin (203); 7. (TIE)Dowd/Lusk (177); 9. (TIE)Ward/Fonseca (159).

125 Points: 1. Langston (282); 2. Brown (271/2 wins); 3. Hughes (254/1 win); 4. Stewart (200/4 wins); 5. (TIE)Byrne/Sellards (183); 7. Tedesco (176); 8. Sorby (160); 9. Anderson (150/1 win); 10. Metcalfe (149).

And about that 125 class...
You'll notice that Team Red Bull KTM's Grant Langston leads the series without an overall win. The former World Champion has demonstrated consistency while those behind him have each been hampered overcoming their own personal disasters in the past few months. Pro Circuit Kawasaki's Mike Brown suffered a separated shoulder after a horrific (but unintentional) run-in with Ryan Hughes at Washougal. Brown rode Saturday practice here in Millville, looks up to speed, and says his shoulder is back "about 90%".

Team Kawasaki's James Stewart has put his broken collarbone in distant memory, and won every moto at each of the 4 rounds since his return. Since then, everyone (including Stewart) keeps checking the math to see if maybe it's not impossible for him to win this championship. All Stewart can do (and likely will, even according to his competitors) is keep winning, and all Langston, Brown, and Hughes can do is try to keep it all together for 4 more consecutive weekends. Stewart won the 125 class here at Millvile last year, and is looking to lay waste to the field again.

Someone old, someone new:
Robbie Reynard is back on track, after an unfortunate injury incurred at High Point. The talented #17 rider has returned with a switch to the 125 class on a KX125.

17-year old mini phenom Broc Hepler is making his professional motocross racing debut at Millville. Fresh out of winning his fourth & final amateur title last weekend at Loretta Lynn's, the young Floridian - a past winner of the Cycle News Fast Brain Award, among many other honors - is racing the 125 class with support from Suzuki, Cernic’s, PR2, SHIFT, Scott, CTI and UPMC Sports Medicine. Hepler has inked a contract with the factory SoBe Suzuki team for the 2004 through 2006 seasons. He'll contest the 125 West SX Series with 125 East Supercross Champ and fellow Pennsylvanian & SoBe Suzuki teammate Branden Jesseman.

Whoops - there it is: Since many of the top riders call Millville their favorite track on the entire National circuit, track owner John Martin decided to discourage that kind of thinking. "The famous Millville Whoop Section" has been doubled in length and level of severity to include a total of 57 sand whoops. Of course, the official Millville track mascot - the "Whoop Monster" is ecstatic with the additional real estate he presides over.

Weather check: Steamy. Highs this weekend are in the high 80s, with high humidity. Feels like Florida. Anyone care to make their race win projections based on that? It'd be a pretty safe bet...

Tape this, TiVo that...this weekend's Millville National will be aired on ESPN2 a week after the event on Saturday 8/23 at Noon EST. Check your local listings. If you live in the northeast, fill up the generator.

The biggest news on Sunday morning is that Team SoBe Suzuki's Branden Jesseman broke his wrist in a practice crash here at Millville. For details on that and an excellent Sunday-morning summary, check out CN's update by Kit Palmer on the home page of Cycle News Online.

Who won practice?
Here are the final practice times from the top riders...for the 125s, it's Hughes (2:19.384), Stewart just behind; for the 250s, it's Carmichael (2:12.523), then Reed and Windham next fastest.

The 125 qualifier/heat races were won by Kelly Smith (who's now back & confirmed to continue with Boost Mobile/Yamaha of Troy for '04) and Andrew Short. Robbie Reynard finished only 20th in the first 125 heat race, but transferred to the main motos after winning the 125 LCQ. Nathan Ramsey and local favorite Heath Voss won their 250 heat races, while Bruce Stratton transferred via the 250 LCQ.

. Overall Womens MX League (WML) race results today: 1. Stefi Laier; 2. Sarah Whitmore; 3. Tania Satchwell.

Our live Virtual Grandstand Coverage will start today at 1:00PM (CST).

125cc Moto One:

The first-moto 125 holeshot goes to Sellards as Stewart sweeps up the inside to move right to the front...then Anderson, Hughes, Brandes, and they head back into the 57-whoop section...

Lap 2 - Stewart is already in full check-out mode, with a lead of 6+ seconds over Sellards, then it's Hughes, Anderson, Brandes, Rodrigues, Smith, Adams, Gosselaar, Byrne, Mills, Langston, Sorby, Lalloz, and Short...Bobby Kiniry is out of the race...

Lap 3 - Stewart with 9+ secondds over Sellards, who's just barely holding off Hughes as Sellards' mechanic signals "Breathe" to him as they go by...Hughes makes the pass coming out of the whoops...

Lap 4 - Stewart's lap times are 4 to 5 seconds per lap faster as he continues to gap his pursuers, Hughes followes, then Sellards, Anderson (who won the last big sand race at Southwick), Brandes, Rodrigues, Smith,k Gosselaar, Adams, Langston, Mills, Byrne, Short, Sorby, Brown, and Lalloz...

Lap 5 - Stewart, Hughes & Sellards, Anderson, Brandes, Rodrigues, Smith, Gosselaar, Langston, Adams, Mills, Bryne, Short, Brown up a spot to 14th...so far, Hughes is making the most of this points-paying first moto while Brown needs to reel in points leader Langston...Stewart falls down in a kicker section, remounts with minimal loss of the distance over those behind...

Lap 6 - Stewart with 21 seconds over Hughes, then it's 4+ seconds back to Sellards, who has a significant gap of 15 seconds over Craig Anderson, then things are pretty close with Brandes, Rodrigues, Smith, Langston and Gosselaar making a very competitive freight train...

Lap 7 - Brown has pulled off the track...Stewart's lead is still 16+ seconds, then the top group after him is Hughes, Sellards, Anderson, Rodrigues, Langston, Brandes, Smith, Gosselaar, Mills, Byrne, Woods, Adams, rookie Hepler, Reynard, Josh Hansen, and Bentley...looks like Brown is done for the moto if not for the day...

Lap 8 - Eric Sorby is also done for the day, tough day for the Pro Circuit Kawasaki team...the factory guy up front - Stewart - is still just fine, with 20+ seconds over Hughes, then Sellards, Rodrigues, Anderson, Langston (now up to 6th & gaining), Kelly Smith, Gosselaar, Byrne, Mills, Brandes, Woods, Reynard, Adams, Hepler...

Lap 9 - Langston is pressuring Anderson, looking to move into 5th...if he makes it by, he has KTM teammate Rodrigues running just ahead in 4th at this point...Stewart is running comfortably, his last lap some 4 seconds slower than his fastest, but with a 23 second cushion over Hughes...Sellards, Rodrigues, Langston still maintain their spots, then Byrne just passed Anderson to move into 6th...Kelly Smith is 8th, then it's Gosselaar, Woods, Mills, Brandes...

Lap 10 - Anderson takes 6th place back, but he has lots of company as Byrne, K. Smith, and Gosselaar are all right with him...

Lap 11 - Stewart is said to have crashed in practice & rung his bell pretty well - but you'd never know it watching him cruise around the Millville track & flying through the giant whoop section & maintaining his 23+ second lead on Hughes...Sellards and Rodrigues running 3rd & 4th, no close action with them right now...Eric Nye in his first pro race, is out of the moto...

Lap 12 - the 2-lap sign is shown to the riders...no change among the leaders...

Lap 13 - White flag, last lap...Stewart styles his way around to celebrate & salute the crowd as he swoops in for the moto win...Ryan Hughes comes across 2nd, then it's Sellards...Rodrigues (who many were expecting to slow down for Langston) - literally stopped before the flag! - allowed Langston to come by in 4th, then Rodrigues 5th...then unofficially it'll be Byrne, Woods, Anderson, Mills, Gosselaar, Smith, Hepler, Reynard...

250cc Moto One:

The gate drops for the 250 National, and the holeshot goes to Chad Reed, followed by Vuillemin - Reed goes off-track in the whoop section, as they come out of the back section it's Reed - still leading! - then Carmichael, Vuillemin, Fonseca, Ward, Lusk...

Lap 2 - Running order is Reed, RC, Vuillemin, Fonseca, Ward, Lusk, Windham, Stiles, Lewis, Ferry, Voss, LaRocco, Narita, Thomas, Clark, Brayton...Carmichael passes Reed to move into the lead...

Lap 3 - Carmichael immediately begins to put distance on Reed as they come by & head into the long whoop section, then it's 4 seconds back to Vuillemin and 2 seconds back to Fonseca after that...Lusk is 3 seconds back from there in 6th, with heavy pressure from Windham, Ferry, and Larry Ward...

Lap 4 - Carmichael looks determined to take his winning streak back, already with nearly 5 seconds distance on Reed...for early in the moto, Fonseca has a good amount of breathing room, some 8 seconds ahead of Vuillemin...then it's Lusk, Windham, Ferry, Ward, LaRocco, Stiles, Narita, Lewis, Voss, Ryan Clark, Roncada, Wey, Thomas...

Lap 5 - Windham is on the move, and has passed both Lusk and Vuillemin to move up to 4th...Windham tried to outjump Fonseca going up the giant uphill triple, and wadded big-time, Fonseca escaped that scrape...

Lap 6 - Running order is now Carmichael (+8 seconds) over Reed (+ 15 seconds) over Fonseca who's being chased closely by Vuillemin, Lusk and Ferry, then another 8 seconds back it's LaRocco, Windham (back up in 8th), Ward, Lewis, Stiles, Voss, Roncada, Wey and Clark...

Lap 7 - the top 3 are still very spread out, as Carmichael leads Reed by 13 seconds, who has 16 seconds over Fonseca...the likeable Costa Rican has his hands full though as a major battle is unfolding right behind him between Lusk, Ferry, and Vuillemin, and the Fonz is about become the front end of it...

Lap 8 - Carmichael's best lap so far was a 2:14.513 on Lap 2, and he's backed it down to a comfortable 2:18.083 on the last one, still with nearly 14 seconds over Reed...Fonseca's still just barely ahead of Lusk and Ferry, while Vuillemin has dropped back a bit in 6th - LaRocco's moving up to look for a way around the proud new Cobra-daddy...so much for that plan - LaRocco fell down, back up & running...

Lap 9 - LaRocco's back up & running 8th, top order is RC, Reed, Ferry up to 3rd now, Fonseca, Lusk, Vuillemin, Windha, LaRocco, Lewis, Wey, Roncada, Voss, Thomas...

Lap 10 - the heat isn't affecting Carmichael at all - his last lap was 6 seconds faster than Reed's, who's still running 2nd...plenty of cushion for Reed over Ferry, while Fonseca still hasn't shaken Lusk in the race for 4th...

Lap 11 - Carmichael's lead is now 32+ seconds up on Reed, then it's Ferry, Fonseca, Lusk, Windham (who moved up), Vuillemin...Lusk moves past Fonseca to take 4th spot...

Lap 12 - Carmichael's lead is now over 36 seconds - any questions?...Reed still has +10 on Ferry in 3rd, then he's followed by Lusk, Fonseca, and then 14 seconds back to Windham, ahead of Vuillemin, LaRocco, Wey, Lewis, Roncada, Voss, Jason Thomas, Lamson, Clark, Ward, K. Johnson, Povolny, Oehlhof, Ramsey, Stratton, the "other" K. Johnson, Karlsen, Brayton, and Carsten... Last Lap - white flag is out, and Carmichael extends his lead to 40+ seconds - remember how they showed that in the original "Great Outdoors" video? - RC comes around to take the first moto win - with a final gap of 51+ seconds - followed by Reed, Ferry, Lusk, Fonseca, LaRocco, Vuillemin, Wey, Windham, Lewis, Voss, Roncada, Jason Thomas, Lamson, Clark, Keith Johnson, Povolny, Ramsey, and Oehlhof.

Lap 7 - Stewart's best lap so far was a 2:19.339 (on Lap 2), last one was still a strong & fast 2:20.661 to put him 22+ seconds ahead of Sellards...Hughes still holding down a strong 3rd, while Rodrigues, Brown, Andersen, Hansen, Short, Mills, Langston (now 10th), Mertens, Gosselaar, Hadsell, Reynard, Owens, Pingree, Hepler, Blose, and Byrne continue...halfway flag is out for the moto...

Lap 8 - Stewart leads Sellards by 25 seconds, the top 8 are all somewhat spread out by 5-8 seconds apart each...Josh Hansen is holding off Langston (now into 9th), Mills, and Mertens...Brown has had enough and rides back to the pits...

Lap 9 - Langston has passed Josh Hansen to move up to 8th...Stewart now leads Sellards by 25.6 seconds, then Hughes, Rodrigues, Anderson, Short...

Lap 10 - With Brown out, Langston moves up to 7th, and is just 2+ seconds behind Anderson - should be able to catch him within the next lap, running about 4 seconds a lap faster that the Aussie Yamaha rider, and he'll be looking to catch Short right after that...David Pingree is out of the race...

Lap 11 - Langston has a flopping right-side radiator shroud, doesn't seem to be slowing him down much though...up front, Stewart leads by over 31 seconds now, Sellards still solid in 2nd, Hughes is 3 seconds adrift and on the prowl for second, running some 3 seconds faster that Sellards this last lap...

Lap 12 - Langston caught Anderson to move into 6th...Stewart leads Sellards by 33+ seconds...Hughes still just 3 seconds behind Sellards, the Yamaha rider picked up his pace last lap...Short picked it up too, and Langston doesn't have much time left to make up a big gap...Hughes has caught Sellards and is trying to effect a pass...Hepler's still running well for his first National, 11th at the moment (was 13th in the 1st moto)...

Lap 13 - The 2-lap card is shown to the riders, Sellards and Hughes both see it, Hughes smells blood and wicks it up...they go into the whoop section and go side by side...Hughes moves into 2nd, and puts Sellards back to 3rd...

Last Lap - Stewart sees the white flag and brings it home for the 2nd moto and the day's overall win - his 10th consecutive 125 moto win, and 5th straight overall...across the line, 2nd for the moto goes to Hughes, followed in by Sellards, Rodrigues, Short, Reynard, Langston, Gosselaar, Mills, Anderson, Hepler, Hadsell, Owens, Byrne, Tedesco, Blose.

125 Moto 2 Results (Official): 1. James Stewart (Kaw); 2. Ryan Hughes (KTM); 3. Brock Sellards (Yam); 4. Joaquim Rodrigues (KTM); 5. Andrew Short (Suz); 6. Robbie Reynard (Kaw); 7. 250cc Moto Two:

Uno mas moto...one more moto today - the 250 Pros are lined up...the 30 second board goes sideways, the AMA guy sprints out of the way, the gate drops, and the last holeshot of the day goes to Carmichael, followed by Windham, Narita...as they work their way around it's RC, Windham, Reed, Ferry, Narita, Lusk, Fonseca, Stiles...Windham is keeping right with Carmichael, trying not to let the champ check out...

Lap 2 - RC, Windham, Reed 3rd, followed by Ferry...then Lusk, Narita, and Fonseca...the top 4 are all not far apart...

Lap 3 - Carmichael leads by 5 seconds, while Reed has passed Windham to move into 2nd, Ferry is 4th, then it's Lusk, Narita, Fonseca, Wey, Stiles, Vuillemin, Lewis, Dowd...

Lap 4 - Now it's Reed trying to reel in Carmichael, actually cutting a faster lap than RC this last time around...order is Carmichael, Reed, Windham, Ferry, Lusk, Fonseca, Narita, Wey, LaRocco, Vuillemin, Stiles, Dowd, Lewis, Voss, Clark...

Lap 5 - And it's Carmichael a second faster than Reed this last lap, putting the gap to 7+/- over 2nd place...about 3 seconds back to Windham and then the same back to Ferry...Lusk along in 5th, then Fonseca being chased closely by 4 riders - Narita, LaRocco, Wey, and Vuillemin...

Lap 6 - Carmichael's laying down the pain to Reed and the rest now, adding 3 seconds cushion this last time around...Windham is under 4 seconds behind Reed, and Ferry's chasing close behind...LaRocco passed Narita to move into 7th...

Lap 7 - Carmichael's lead is now 11+ seconds over Reed, who has had his 4-second gap on Windham cut in half...Windham is moving up and will be looking for the opportunity to pass...meanwhile, Ferry is also just 2 seconds behind Windham, and keeping the Honda rider in sight...Windham takes the chance, and passes Reed to move into 2nd...Reed now 3rd...LaRocco passes Fonseca to squeeze into 5th...halfway flag is out...

Lap 8 - Up front, Carmmichael leads now by 14+ seconds, Reed doing his best to stick with Windham who's still in that runner-up position he held...Ferry's still right there with those two, watching the best race on the track right now...Ferry's on a faster pace, and may be in position soon to put a move on his teammate Reed...Dowd crashed in the whoop section

Lap 9 - mmmmm, sandburgers...Carmichael still leads Windham by 14 seconds, no significant difference in their lap times, so Windham's not really catching RC right now, not very much time left in the moto...Reed picks it up a bit, and puts an extra couple seconds of comfort zone between himself and Ferry...

Lap 10 - Not a lot of drama left at the front, as the top 4 are all rather spread out...Dowd's back up & running in 8th, holding off Nick Wey and Akira Narita...

Lap 11 - Vuillemin has pulled off the track, and is laying on the ground, likely the heat has gotten the best of the Yamaha rider - it's hot & humid...Carmichael leads by 19 seconds, Reed's still 3rd, then Ferry, and LaRocco into 5th, after that it's Lusk, Fonseca, Dowd, Roncada, Wey, Narita, Ward, Lewis, Voss, Ramsey, Lamson, Thomas, Clark, Oehlhof...

Lap 12 - Ferry is back within a second behind Chad Reed, trying to make a run for 3rd before the end of the race...

Lap 13 - Still no change at the front, except Reed is managing to keep Ferry just out of passing range...behind them, it's 37 seconds back to LaRocco...

Lap 14 - Carmichael is shown the 2-lap card this time by the AMA official, Windham is running faster, but not enough to make a meaningful dent in Carmichael's lead of 20+ seconds at this point...Ferry made his move, passing Reed and immediately charging to a comfortable lead over his teammate...it's now Carmichael, Windham, Ferry, Reed, LaRocco, Lusk, Fonseca, Dowd, Roncada, Wey, Ward, and Stiles... Last Lap - Carmichael is shown the white flag and cruises around saluting the Millville crowd to end Windham's short winning streak, and continue his own unbroken win record here at Spring Creek MX...at the line, it's Carmichael, Windham, Ferry, Reed, LaRocco, Lusk, Fonseca just barely beating Dowd across the line, Roncada, and Wey.

Thanks for tuning in - be sure to swing by next week for another live webcast from Round #10 at Binghamton, New York...1:00PM (EST).
