Red Bud Pre-Race Notes:

Welcome to Cycle News Online's live Virtual Grandstand coverage of the Scott USA Nationals at Red Bud, round number 6 of the 2003 AMA Chevy Trucks U.S. Motocross Championships, presented by Dunlop Tires. Virtual Grandstand is sponsored this & every weekend of the 2003 MX Nationals by Yamaha.

If it's 4th of July weekend, it must be Red Bud - and this weekend marks the 30th anniversary of this event.

Friday night / Saturday morning saw strong thunderstorms rolling through the Michiana area, but cleared by mid-morning. Practice saw the Red Bud course a little soupy in spots but mostly in excellent shape. No rain happened Saturday night, allowing the Red Bud crew to dry out the wet spots & groom the course to ideal racing conditions on Sunday morning.

Team Honda's Ricky Carmichael comes into Red Bud on one big red winning streak. With a 53-point lead at the halfway point in the series (244 points & 5 wins for RC, vs. 191 points for Kevin Windham), the defending champ could conceivably sit in a lawn chair today & still leave with the lead. While a couple riders have put chinks in RC's moto-winning armor (Windham collected a moto win at Hangtown, and Tim Ferry got one at Budd's Creek), no one has been able to stop his 20 consecutive overall National MX wins, dating back to the end of the '01 season.

Kawasaki's James Stewart destroyed the competition 3 weeks ago at Budd's Creek, gapping the rest of the 125 class by over 45 seconds in one moto (and even beating Carmchael's best lap time for the 250s), and coming back from a first-lap crash to win the second moto. Bubba is mathematically out of the 125 title run (barring any major disasters for Brown-Langston-Hughes-Sorby), effectively creating two sets of action in the 125s - Bubba riding his 125 faster than anyone ever has, and the drama of the championship chase among the rest.

Suzuki's Branden Jesseman is back in action, handily winning his qualifier race Saturday. KTM's Ryan Hughes is riding today, still healing from a borken tib/fib and hoping to make the most of today.

Honda's Nathan Ramsey rode practice on Saturday, but did not ride his qualifier race on Sunday morning as planned. Ramsey has been showing steady improvement with his recent rides as he returned from injury, but apparently had a setback this weekend.

Get in the tube: Today's racing from Red Bud will be broadcast on ESPN2 on Saturday, July 12th. The 125 race will air at Noon EST, and the 250 race will air at 1pm EST. Check your local listings & set your VCR...it's gonna be a good one.

Red Bull KTM rider Josh Woods is back in action, as is Mach One Yamaha's Heath Voss. ECC Suzuki's Shae Bentley is riding today as well.

And it's getting hot...pre-race temps are in the mid-80s, with humidity around 63%.

Points check: Going into Red Bud the point standings are:
125s - 1. Brown (188/2 wins); 2. Langston (173); 3. Hughes (151/1 win); 4. Sorby (145); 5. Sellards (117); 6. Tedesco (109); 7. Brandes (108); 8. Byrne (104); 9. (TIE)Anderson/Boniface (101).
