Southwick Pre-Race Notes:

Welcome to Southwick, Massachusetts for the Motocross 338 Nationals by Suzuki, the fourth round of the 2003 AMA Chevy Trucks US Motocross Nationals, for Cycle News Online's live Virtual Grandstand coverage, sponsored exclusively by Yamaha.

It rained all day yesterday, but today the rain has stopped andthe track is in perfect condition. It's a little cloudy and about 65 degrees and they say it will not rain until tonight.

Who's favored today? - Ricky Carmichael has won the 250 class the past 3 years at Southwick. Before that, he won the 125 class here in '99 and '97. Those expecting RC to be disrupted by a mudfest need only be reminded of his performance during the 2nd moto at Hangtown in 2002, where the diminuitive Floridian proved that he can ride as well as anyone in the slop. Either way, it'd be hard to beat him this weekend, but there are plenty of others who'd like to put the rev limiter on the defending champ.

The points coming into Southwick look like this:
250cc: 1. Carmichael (147/3 wins); 2. Reed (120); 3. Ferry (114); 4. Windham (113); 5. LaRocco (90).
125cc: 1. Brown (136/2 wins); 2. Hughes (135/1 win); 3. Sorby (116); 4. Langston (112); 5. Tedesco (72).

Suzuki has owned the 125 class at Southwick for the past 3 years; Danny Smith won an emotional overall here last years, and Travis Pastrana cleaned up in 2000 and 2001. Both of them are out with injuries for at least the season. Who won the 125's here before that?

John Dowd won the 125 race at Southwick in 1998, and won the 250 race in '97. He's suited up and riding healthy this weekend, looking forward to racing in front of his hometown crowd.

Speaking of hometown favorites, Doug Henry is "in" for Southwick. Running #19, the popular Yamaha rider is back to gather points to keep his National number for another year, and judging by his practice times, just may be fast enough be mix it up with the very best regulars again this year. Showing up in his own truck, with wife Stacy keeping his bike clean, Doug Henry is stoked to be here, and the fans are happy he's here. Henry won the 125 MX Nationals at Soutwick a decade ago (1993 & '94), and won again in 1998 during his amazing comeback run.

Kawasaki's defending 125 National Champ James "Bubba" Stewart had originally been planning to make a return from injury this weekend at Southwick - but he'll sit out at least one more week. Look for him to return next week at Budd's Creek, or possibly Red Bud on July 4th weekend. This would have been the last realistic mathematical chance for Bubba to retain the 125 title if he'd raced this weekend. Look for more to unfold on this story over the next few weeks.

Oldest active winner: Larry Ward won the Southwick 125 National way back in 1989 on a Honda. He's back again this year - on a Honda - holding down a very respectable 7th in the 250cc points going into the 2003 Southwick MX.

Jeff Stanton won the most 250cc overalls at Southwick, collecting 4 straight wins in the 250 class (1989 through 1992). If Ricky Carmichael adds another to the three 250cc wins already he has under his belt, he could tie that today - although with RC's two extra 125 MX National wins here too, he's arguably already the winningest rider ever at MX338.

TV Time: Today's racing from Southwick will be broadcast on ESPN2 on Sunday, June 15th at 2pm EST (125cc) and 3pm EST (250cc), and then repeat airings will be on June 16th at 2am EST (125cc) and June 17th at 3pm EST (250cc)...don't miss it.

Racing will begin a little bit after 1:00 PM EST...

Lap 12 - Larocco's coming on strong, having passed Reed on the last lap, and he has momentum as we go through the final laps of this moto...now passing Henry too & moving all the way up to 5th - a long way to the next position, Larocco would need to make up 10 seconds to catch Windham ahead of him...

Lap 10 - Ferry has passed Fonseca to move into 6th, and is still riding hard & continuing to move forward...the next rider in his sights will be teammate Chad Reed, who's 9 seconds ahead...with Ferry running the last leap some 3 seconds faster than Reed, he should be able to catch him before the end of the moto...
