Glen Helen Pre-Race Notes:

Happy Mothers Day, and welcome to Cycle News Online's live Virtual Grandstand coverage (sponsored exlusively by Yamaha) from the first round of the 2003 AMA Chevy Trucks U.S. Motocross Championships from Glen Helen Raceway in San Bernardino, California.

There are only a couple times each year when the factory trucks are full of healthy riders, and the motocross community can sense the anticipation of a field deep with talent. This is one of those days, and the excitement at Glen Helen is palpable as many of the top riders who have been noticeably absent due to injuries and even retirement will appear on the starting lane. Hold your breath, the gate for the first moto will drop at 1:00pm PST.

Back in the saddle:
When was the last time so many retired riders got back into the mix? Greg Albertyn, who was the 1999 AMA 250cc National MX champion is racing at Glen Helen today on a SoBe Suzuki...this is just a one-race deal for the likeable South African, but he's been training, and with a couple strong motos he had here at Glen Helen in the World Cup MX back in October, he's shooting for a 5 to 10 result as his goal today. Southern California favorite Ryan Hughes - retired a couple years ago, but now back riding a factory KTM 125 - has been training for months, and the Glen Helen fans are pulling for a strong set of motos to kick off his run at the entire '03 MX Nationals in the 125 class. Kevin Windham - the last rider to beat defending champion Ricky Carmichael at an outdoor MX National (Washougal 2001) took last year off to reflect and recharge...he's back for the Nationals riding a factory Honda-equipped CR450 for Factory Connection and No Fear, and his own deal similar to the independent program that Mike LaRocco runs.

Back on track: The just-ended '03 Supercross season claimed more than it's share of riders, resulting in nearly-empty factory trucks. Most of those riders are back, and the depth of talent - at least in the 250 class may be unprecedented.

Team Honda: Nathan Ramsey's back, riding the CRF450, and joins healthy 250cc teammates Ricky Carmichael and Ernesto Fonseca (his 250cc National MX debut) under the big red awning. No one expects RC to repeat his unprecedented unbroken 24-moto win streak from last year - but no one would be surprised if he continues it.

Amsoil/Chaparral Honda: Mike LaRocco is back on his factory-equipped Honda CR250. Michael Byrne is back, riding the 125 class, as is Mike Gosselaar. Ryan Mills joins the team for the 125 Nationals as well. Travis Preston who would have made his 250 National debut on the CRF450 is still injured, still out for a few more weeks.

Team Yamaha: David Vuillemin returns on the factory YZ450F, as does teammate Tim Ferry, who finished 2nd in last year's 250 Nationals. THQ World Supercross champ Chad Reed comes into Glen Helen fresh off a six-race stadium winning streak, and this weekend signals his debut in the 250 Nationals. Reed won 2 of 3 motos at the World Cup here in October, so there's no doubt about his speed at this track.

Team Boost Mobile / Yamaha of Troy: Brock Sellards, Ivan Tedesco, and Josh Hansen - all rising young stars who made strong showings toward the end of the SX series, all healthy and returning on YZ125s; Aussie Craig Anderson is back, riding the YZ250F.

Mach 1 Yamaha: Nick Wey, who wound up 4th in the AMA Supercross Series, is riding the YZ450F along with teammate Heath Voss.

Team Chevy Trucks Kawasaki: Yogi's back - Ezra Lusk, 3rd in the '02 250 MX Nationals returns from a wrist injury. He's joined by recent recruit Robbie Reynard. The big news - unfortunately - is that defending 125 National Champion James Stewart is out with a broken right clavicle (collarbone) and concussion that he suffered from his scary crash last weekend at the Las Vegas SX. He'll be absent for at least the first two - maybe three - rounds of the series. Stewart is planning to check the points after Hangtown, and if any of the 125 riders are beginning to dominate, he'll try to get back at Mt. Morris; otherwise, he'll wait until Southwick and hope to collect enough points by the end to still have a shot.

Team Pro Circuit / Chevy Trucks Kawasaki: Mike Brown who missed most of the '02 Nationals, but wound up 2nd in the 125 East SX series is riding healthy. Eric Sorby is riding well, Justin Buckelew is out with a broken kneecap, and Matt Walker is out with knee issues for 7-8 weeks.

Team SoBe Suzuki: Roger Decoster's greatest hope and biggest headache, wild child Travis Pastrana is back in action, showing great speed in the weekend's practices on his factory RM250. Sebastien Tortelli returns to the 250 wars and Stephane Roncada's riding the 125 under the factory colors. Sean Hamblin, who's been riding semi-healthy (his elbow was chipped after being landed on at Vegas)is running the 250 class. Matthieu Lalloz is in. On the downside, Branden Jesseman is out at least 3 months with a bum thumb. Casey Johnson was invited to fill that spot for at least five rounds. Danny Smith is out for the entire season, dealing with replacement of his ACL.

Team ECC Suzuki: Steve Lamson is riding, along with teammates Shane Bess and Shae Bentley, are all in for the 125s.

Team MotoworldRacing.com Suzuki: Andrew Short, who won the Dave Coombs Sr. Memorial 125cc East/West Shootout last weekend at Las Vegas is in for today's 125 race. His teammates - Dvis Pingree, Ryan Morais, Bobby Kiniry and Daryl Hurley are all healthy and racing the 125s as well.

Team Red Bull KTM: Grant Langston is fully recovered and racing; the original plan was for him to ride the 250 class this season - midweek, it was announced that the Zulu Warrior switched to the 125 class...with the decimated ranks of top 125 guys, he should prove a threat for the title if he can keep it together for 12 consecutive rounds. Ryan Hughes is providing plenty of buzz under the Red Bull tent with his return to full-time racing at the MX Nationals. Hughes has already proven he's a threat, winning the 4-Stroke World Championships here at Glen Helen a couple weeks ago, and the first 2 rounds of the AMA Western 4-Stroke Nationals. He's on a 125 here, and anyone who saw him race the tiddler here at the World Cup knows he still has the speed. Holeshot artist Joaquim Rodriques is riding the 250, and then Steve Boniface, Josh Woods, Brett Metcalfe, and Ben Townley will be painting the gate orange this season.

Team Moto-xXx: Larry Ward, at 34 years old, is still having fun racing and running near the front. He'll be hunting for more strong results this season on a CRF450. Kyle Lewis, fast last year, is back from injuries and is joined by Clark Stiles in the 250 class. Troy Adams will be campaigning the 125 class on a YZ250F.

Team Subway Racing: Jason Thomas will be sandwiched between Joe Oehlhof and Ted Campbell as they campaign their white & yellow Honda CRF450s on the National circuit.

Team Solitaire Yamaha / Crossroads Motorsports: Ryan Clark isn't quite so solo this year. He'll still campaign the 250 class on a YZ250, and he's joined by Erick Vallejo and Micahel Blose riding YZ125s.

Team Cernics.com / KTM: John Dowd, the reigning "old man" of motocross will turn 38 this season as he campaigns the 250cc class one more year. He's joined by Keith "S." Johnson, another fast Massachusetts native.

But what about the track?...
Glen Helen has never looked better. One week ago, heavy rains had bikes stuck in the quagmire around here. Promoter Bud Feldkamp brought in an enourmous amount of sand and had track builder Jody Weisel mix it in, making for a distinct change in the dirt. Many of the jumps and sections that always would be slick and hard-packed by race time are holding a sandy texture, making some of the "sand specialists" feel right at home. The huge "Talladega" bowl-shaped first turn has been built up even higher, and some of the riders' lines go nearly up to the top. Mt. St. Helens, topped with a giant American flag, is still dominating the landscape - the 125s are taking a bit longer getting to the top, since the hillsides also received generous doses of sand. There seems to be plenty of moisture under the surface, and the track crews are keeping the dirt wet between motos.

Long day: Since this is the first round of the series, riders who were not in the top 10 in the 2002 year-end standings were required to run in the heat races to qualify for the points-paying motos this afternoon. Even if a rider was "top 10" in one class (say, 125s) last year, they must still ride a qualifier for the other class (250s) if they're moving up. In the 125s, some of those riders included Michael Byrne, Chris Gasselaar, Grant Langston, Matthieu Lalloz, Michael Brandes, Josh Hansen, Casey Johnson, Erick Vallejo, Ryan Hughes, Stephane Roncada, Steve Boniface, Eric Sorby, Andrew Short, Mike Brown, Ivan Tedesco, Billy Laninovich, and David Pingree. Some of the "big time" 250 riders that had to qualify were Chad Reed, David Vuillemin, Heath Voss, Joaquim Rodrigues, Nick Wey, Ryan Clark, Larry Ward, Kevin Windham, Ernesto Fonseca, and Blair Morgan.
