In 1989, Charles and Sharon Clayton, the founders of  Cycle News, America's weekly motorcycle newspaper, established the Clayton Memorial Foundation upon realizing the need to financially help motorcycle racers who had been injured while racing. The Claytons wanted to give back to an industry that had given so much to them.

Since the inception of the foundation, the nonprofit charity has disbursed thousands of dollars to injured racers in need. Most of these riders have had nowhere to turn once their insurance funds have run out and the benefits or raffle money that their friends and clubs contributed was gone.

Our mission is to continue giving financial aid to riders who are injured in competitions sanctioned by organizations which are, in sole opinion of the Board of Directors, bonafide motorcycle-racing-sanctioning bodies.

"Thank you for stepping in to help
me pay my medical bills. Your support of the motocross racing community has been greatly recognized and appreciated.
Keep up the great work!"

Best Regards,

Mike Young, Jr.

Fundraising Examples...

The foundation has had donations from classic motorcycles to club functions, which include raffles, chili cook-offs, proceeds from rides, etc. There have been auctions of riders' personal apparel to charity golf tournament proceeds. Supercross stars Jeremy McGrath and Kevin Windham have their Holeshot Award monies donated. And Event Promoters are getting involved by donating a portion of ticket prices of their events to the foundation.

Not only can you help someone in need, you can have a lot of fun being involved!

Clayton Memorial Foundation,

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all persons involved in the Clayton Foundation for the support and financial assistance provided me.

My accident was very much indeed a life-changing experience (physically and mentally). I appreciate all the help provided me by the Clayton Foundation and the cycling community.

Thanks a Lot,

Derek Mortland

"I've been very fortunate in my career to escape major injuries on several occasions. Knowing there are people who care, when or if that happens, is more fortunate. These people are the Clayton Memorial Foundation. They pick up where the insurance companies leave off. Whether you're an amateur or a professional, a motocrosser, dirt tracker, or a road racer, the Clayton Memorial Foundation will be there for you. I support their efforts, and you should too."

As motorcycle enthusiasts, we take for granted the risk and skill motorcycle racers display every time they put their wheels on the starting line. The Clayton Memorial Foundation exists as a safety net for those who contribute to the sport we all love. Put yourself in their place for just a moment... Wouldn't you hope that someone cared enough to contribute?

The Clayton Memorial Foundation is counting on the tremendous generosity motorcyclists are so well known for. We hope we can count on your support when our friends need it the most. Now and in the years to come, please support the Clayton Memorial Foundation.
