Stewart Fast At X Games Supermoto Qualifying

The Supermoto practice and seeding have just concluded at the X Games and Supercross Champion James Stewart was impressive. Stewart was third quickest behind Jeff Ward and Italian Ivan Lazzarini.

On a track that featured a more traditional dirt section for the Supermoto riders, there were early standouts in the morning practice session. But when it came time to seeding, the riders got down to business. Coming out strong, as he has done at each of the last few seasons of Summer X Supermoto, was Mark Burkhart who piloted his KTM to a fifth overall qualifying time of 85.68 seconds.

Frenchman, Husqvarna-mounted Adrien Chareyre qualified in fourth, narrowly surpassing the time of Burkhart with an 85.66.

The surprise (well, sort of a surprise) of the morning was Stewart. The San Manuel Yamaha rider posted a time that was less than one second off the leader's. Turning continuous fast laps, Stewart qualified with a time of 85.46 and appeared to quite comfortable on the asphalt section.

With a time of only .4 of  a second ahead of Stewart, veteran X Games competitor and the oldest racer in the event, Jeff Ward, posted an 84.97 good enough for second. Despite narrowly avoiding a crashing Steve Bonsey in the dirt section, Ward pushed on to post one of his fastest times near the end of the one-hour qualifying session.

The time to beat on the day though belonged to the Italian Ivan Lazzarini. With an 84.53, Lazzarini set the pace and looked good doing it.

The main event will be televised live tomorrow on ABC.
