Perhaps the best turnout of the year witnessed Herfoss (pictured) take his first-ever Premire-class title, aided by a championship-saving run from the back of the pack on Saturday. After stalling his bike on the opening lap, Herfoss came from nearly last to finish second, keeping him in the points race. On Sunday, the HCM KTM rider duplicated the performance by coming from last again, this time because his clutch gave out in his heat race, forcing him to start from the back of the grid. The performance gave Herfoss the title over Graves Yamaha’s Mark Burkhart, who all but dropped out of the championship chase on Saturday after blowing an engine while leading the main event.
Aprilia’s Darryl Atkins suffered a similar misfortune in the Unlimited division when he sustained a flat tire while leading the main. Atkins came into the race with a five-point cushion over Hart & Huntington’s Steve Drew, but was only able to manage a ninth place after the flat. And while Atkins came back to win Sunday’s final over KTM’s Kurt Nichol, Drew secured the title with a fourth-place finish.
Meanwhile, the Graves Yamaha-backed Currie claimed his sixth win in six starts and easily outdistanced Matt Burton for the Lites title. Results:
