The factory KTM rider’s win did not come easily, as local favorite Cassidy Anderson put his Troy Lee Designs/Red Bull Honda into the lead at the start and, running a torrid pace, led the first nine laps of the 12-lap final.
And while Anderson led, Herfoss, his HMC KTM Racing teammate Chris Fillmore, and Graves Yamaha’s Mark Burkhart, followed in a close formation.
At the midway point, Anderson started to cramp up and with three laps to go, both Fillmore and Herfoss went under Anderson at almost the same time. From there, Fillmore led for a lap and then lost the front end, handing the lead and eventually the win to Herfoss.
“That was intense,” said Herfoss. “I’m not sure but I think that might have been the closest race I’ve ever had on a 450. Cassidy even said he’s never been that fast on this track before. It was fast and anyone of us four guys could have won it.”
Anderson held on for second, while Burkhart finished out the podium
In the Lites division, Grave’s Yamaha’s Brandon Currie kept his perfect season intact by taking his four-straight win at Miller Motorsport Park.
The big story was motocrosser-turned Supermoto race Gray Davenport, who overcame a stop-and-go penalty for jumping the start to finish second on a Yamaha.
Third went to KTM-mounted Matt Burton.
In the Unlimited class, Aprilia’s Darryl Atkins took the lead in the class standings with a controversial win. Series points leader Steve Drew put his Hart & Huntington-backed KTM into the lead at the drop of the flag but on lap two, Drew and Atkins appeared to touch, although Atkins claimed they never did. The end result was a a low-side by Drew, which left him working his way up from last to an eventual ninth-place finish.
Atkins now leads Drew by five points going into the final double-header round in Austin.
Husqvarna-mounted Derek Costella finished second in the Unlimited class, followed by Josh Chisum on a KTM.
