Herfoss, a 21-year-old Australian, jumped to the front and built up over a nine second lead before a spill cut the gap in half. But he was quickly up and from then to the end, Herfoss never put a wheel wrong en route to celebrating his first Supermoto win in Doug Henry’s New England Supermoto Grand Prix at Stafford Motor Speedway in Stafford Springs, Connecticut.
“I nearly won a (Supermoto) race in ’05, all the way back then,” Herfoss, who won two Supermoto Unlimited races in 2005, said. “And ’06 didn’t go so well. And then last year KTM gave me a great opportunity with this bike and I did choke up a few times and I just need to…it’s like anything, I started when I was younger and as soon as I got my first win it was easier. And when I went to Supermoto it was the same thing. I know how to win, it’s just taken me too long to do it. Last year here I crashed out of the lead and this year I knew I was fastest and I felt comfortable in front. So hopefully it’s not my last one, that’s for sure.”
Graves Motorsports Yamaha’s Mark Burkhart finished second, at 7.916 secs., with Herfoss’s teammate Chris Fillmore third.
The second kept Burkhart in the championship lead. With two of six rounds completed, he leads Herfoss 47 to 45. Fillmore is third with 38.
Graves Motorsports Yamaha’s Brandon Currie held off RJ Performance/Maxxis/KTM’s Matt Burton for his second win in a row in the Supermoto Lites final.
Burton got the jump, but Currie ran him down and made the pass on the fourth of 14 laps. Burton chased him to the end, only to come up short by 1.534 secs.
Dirt Digits/Mach 1 Motorsports’ Danny Casey (Hon) was a distant third, just in front of Bering Brakes/Dubach Racing’s John Lewis (KTM).
Currie has 40 points to 44 for Burton, with Casey third at 40.
The night began with Rockstar/Hart & Huntington’s Steve Drew (KTM) dedicating his Supermoto Unlimited win to teammate Tony Hart.
Drew was away first, but Team All Access GP Husqvarna’s Micky Dymond wouldn’t let him go. Dymond hounded him until the final lap when he made mistakes in two consecutive corners that allowed Drew to pull away. Dymond couldn’t get his Husqvarna re-started and finished a lap down in fifth.
“I can’t give my thanks to the Hart family enough, and they have all our support and we love them and we’re going to miss Tony (Hart) a lot,” Drew said. “I just hope that hopefully we can try to recover from this and embrace the memories we have of him.”
Second went to the factory Aprilia/Rip it Energy Fuel’s Darryl Atkins, with Josh Chisum taking third.
Drew’s second win of the season gives him 50 points to 40 for Chisum and 37 for Atkins.
