Burkhart Over Ward at Miller Motorsports Park

Supermoto in the Heat

Graves Motorsports Yamaha’s Mark Burkhart took advantage of a mistake by hometown hero Cassidy Anderson to win the AMA Red Bull Supermoto Championship final at Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah and move within one point of the championship lead.

Anderson put his knowledge as the main instructor of the MMP Supermoto school on display early in the race. The Provo, Utah resident led from the start and was in control when he slid out on the long left hand entrance to the east dirt section on the fourth of 12 laps.

That put Troy Lee Honda’s Jeff Ward in control, but only for a lap. Burkhart passed him in the west dirt section on the next lap to take the lead. Ward hung tough for much of the race, but he’d had a chest cold the two previous weeks and didn’t have the strength to deal with the searing early evening heat and finished 4.225 seconds back.

“I’ll take second today,” Ward said. “I’ve been sick for like two weeks and it’s the first time I’ve ridden in two weeks this weekend. So I understood. He kicked my butt.”

Burkhart’s second win in a row gives him 69 points, one less than Ward, after three of 10 rounds.

“I want the number one plate and that’s it,” Burkhart began, “and I’m going to do whatever it takes to get it.”

Chris Fillmore gave Kawasaki their first Supermoto podium by racing the Monster Energy Kawasaki KX450F to third.

All Access/Parts Unlimited Honda’s Micky Dymond was alone in fourth, well in front of Anderson. Anderson had a hard time firing his Honda CRF450R and rejoined the race in 13th before storming through the field to finish fifth.

Aprilia’s Benny Carlson kept his perfect season alive by winning his third PPG Supermoto Unlimited race in a row flag to flag.

“Three in a row; we’ve had a good run,” Carlson said. “Knock on wood, everything keeps going this way this season.”

KTM’s racing boss Kurt Nicoll stuck with Carlson before tailing off at the end of the eight lap race.

“I did as best I could,” Nicoll said after finishing 5.203 secs. back. “I really thought I could push Ben (Carlson) in and I pushed him as hard as I could, but you know he beat me out of the start. I managed to pace with him, but couldn’t catch him. That’s it. I tried as hard as I could.”

BP Racing’s Josh Chisum (KTM) finished third for his second podium of the season, but the first for his new team.

Carlson leads Chisum 75 to 55 in the championship standings.

Troy Lee Design Honda’s David Pingree led every lap and narrowly beat the fast charging Brandon Currie (Yam) in the AMA Hot Wheels Supermoto Lites race. The difference between them was .723 secs.

The win was Pingree’s first of the season, after Currie had taken the first two races. That put the Graves Motorsports’ Yamaha rider three points ahead of Pingree in the point standings.

Red Bull KTM’s Josh Hansen finished third in his AMA Supermoto debut. LA Fuel GP’s Adam Cini, with whom Hansen battled, finished fourth after an eventful race.
