Filmore, Ward Win In Wisconsin

Supermoto Time

Chris Fillmore and Jeff Ward scored wins for Honda and Team Troy Lee Designs in AMA Supermoto racing at Road America on Saturday night. Cassidy Anderson (Honda) and Benny Carlson (KTM) also scored wins in the Supermoto Lites and Unlimited classes, respectively.

Fillmore’s win was his first in the Supermoto class. Ward, on the other hand, has won half the 2006 AMA Supermoto races coming into Road America and his victory moved him to 32 point lead over Yamaha’s Doug Henry in the championship.

Rain fell continually through the day and played havoc with the riders, the track, AMA officials, and the few curious fans who made their way over from the Champ Car races that were held concurrently at Road America on the big four mile road course.

Weather forecasters had been calling for a wet weekend and thus the rain came as no surprise. In the riders meeting the AMA announced that the dirt section of the course was not rideable as the clay soil was especially greasy. The AMA thus decided to practice, qualify, and race on only the paved go-kart track. In addition, the AMA elected to scratch superpole and the last chance qualifier race to move up the start of the 18-lap final races.

Fillmore was fastest in qualifying and successfully converted pole position to a W in Supermoto Race 1. Ward was on Fillmore’s rear wheel in the early going, but the championship leader had to run off track to save himself from crashing after hitting a slick spot. Doug Henry inherited second but was too far off of the flying Fillmore to challenge for the lead. Defending series champion Jurgen Kunzel of Germany (KTM) worked his way clear of wild card entry Adrien Chareyre of France (Husqvarna) to take third. Mark Burkhart (Yamaha) rounded out the top five after charging through the pack following a crash in the chicane on the fourth lap.

The rain stayed away for the second Supermoto race, but the track was still soaking in water and the night chill caused foggy eye goggles for the riders. This time around Ward was on his game and rode a perfect race from the instant the lights turned green. Fillmore was Ward’s early challenger, but Fillmore crashed on the sixth lap and ruined his chances of a double win. Again, Henry was there to pick up second place. But five laps later Henry fell too and bent the handlebars and twisted the gear shift lever. Kunzel moved from third to second after Henry’s crash. Burkhart, who was bottled up at the start, passed Kunzel with two laps to go. Chareyre was fourth, again, while Josh Chisum (Honda) finished a respectable fifth.

Cassidy Anderson rebounded from losing his first Supermoto Lites race of the year at the previous round in Denver and put in another great ride on his red Honda. Normally Anderson’s competition comes from the blue Yamaha of Brandon Currie, but this time Currie had a poor start and Leo Bagnis (KTM) and Danny Casey (Yamaha) were up front to give the race a slightly different look. Bagnis dropped from second to fifth on lap four to take himself out of contention. Casey kept his cool for the next fourteen laps and finished second, his best finish of the year. Currie, Bagnis, and Alex Thiebault (Husqvarna) all had lonely rides to finish in third through fifth, respectively.

West Bend, Wisconsin’s Ben Carlson was happy to win his home race Supermoto Unlimited. Carlson overtook early leader David Baffeleuf (Husqvarna) with an exciting pass in front of the spectators on the third lap. Baffeleuf stalled the engine in the big Husky and wrecked his race. Leo Bagnis (KTM) moved up to second but was a long ways down the track from Carlson. Defending series champion Micky Dymond (KTM) was a likewise distance from Bagnis and had an unchallenged ride to third.
