Henry Rules Race One at Shawano Supermoto

Henry, Burkhart and Yamaha Are Tops

Graves Motorsports Yamaha’s Doug Henry scored his second victory of the season and the seventh of his AMA Supermoto career during the first leg of Supermoto-class racing at USA International Raceway in Shawano, Wisconsin, today.

The 35-year-old Henry got off to a second-place start from the second position on the grid, just behind Chris Fillmore and just ahead of polesitter Jurgen Kunzel on Red Bull KTM. Henry then bided his time behind Fillmore, who made a mistake in the dirt section on lap seven and yielded the point. Fillmore then dogged Henry for several laps before losing the front end and crashing off the track at high speed in a downhill left-hander on lap nine. From there Henry managed a lead of approximately 2.5 seconds for the rest of the race, finishing 2.415 seconds ahead of second place as he wheelied across the stripe.

Australia’s Troy Herfoss, GP Husqvarna’s 18-year-old wonder, rode a smart race to finish second, ahead of a great battle between Red Bull KTM’s Jurgen Kunzel and HMC/Generations of Sonoma KTM’s Benny Carlson, with the Wisconsinite Carlson getting the nod by .301 of a second at the finish to land on the podium.

Kunzel was fourth, followed by JST Racing/Motostrano.com Honda’s Massimilliano Gazzarata, Troy Lee Designs Honda’s Jeff Ward, Fillmore, Red Bull KTM’s Kurt Nicoll, Team X3 Leo Vince USA Yamaha’s Andrea Bartolini and his X3 teammate, Max Verderosa.

Graves Motorsports Yamaha’s Mark Burkhart dominated the Supermoto Lite race that followed. Burkhart didn’t get the holeshot – that fell to Red Bull KTM rookie John Lewis – but Burkhart took over before the urban jumps and never looked back, pulling out to a 27.443 margin of victory in the 16-lap race. Currie Racing/Troy Lee Designs Kawasaki’s Brandon Currie finished second, with Fast 50s Yamaha rider Calvin Andlovec finishing third.
