“We find ourselves in an era in which the research and development of motorcycles requires free thinking full of visionary dreams, without being bound or limited by preconceived notions including conventional thinking on product use,” said Takeo Fukui, president and CEO of Honda Motor Company as he introduced the bikes to a throng of journalists.
The first concept model to be shown was the E4-01, and automatic super sports motorcycle. Developed by the designer of Honda’s RC211V MotoGP racer, the E4-01 is a wolf in sheep’s clothing: the outside looks all scooter, but underneath one finds a 903cc in-line four-cylinder engine, 17-inch wheels, and dual front brake disks with radial calipers.
Alongside the E4-01 was the DN-01, the first product developed by Honda’s “Dream New” design project.
“The DN-01 transcends the common, accepted image of the motorcycle, creating a totally new value for the customer,” said Fukui.
New value is created by providing a new level of riding pleasure, according to Honda. Honda started with a cruiser riding position and added a super-smooth automatic transmission, and then styled the final product with a new and distinctive look.
“Honda plans to start sales of the DN-01 in the near future,” said Fukui. “Please look forward to it!”
