Yoshimura Race Shop Now Open

Make your production bike into a Superbike

Don't you wish you had access to the same performance parts and technology that Mat Mladin has?

Well, now you do: Yoshimura R&D of America is now offering race-bred parts and services to the general public through its new Yoshimura Race Shop (YRS). Racers can get their hands on the parts that have been developed and fine-tuned in racing - most recently with this year's GSX-Rs raced by Mat Mladin, Tommy Hayden and Blake Young. Although YRS will be treated as a separate entity from the R&D side of the company, it is still located in the same complex of buildings where Yoshimura does its magic in Chino, California. These specialty YRS parts can be identified by their Yoshimura branding and by their distinctive bronze color, which Yoshimura calls Magnasonian.

"The super secret days of racing are over," Brant Russell, vice president of marketing for Yoshimura R&D of America said. "The fact that we are now racing production-based Superbikes makes it a good time to open our doors and offer parts and services to the general public... It's time to share our success and lineage with our customers. That is why YRS was created."

YRS intends to cater to racers of modern, high-performance bikes – whether that racing is done on pavement, dirt, or both, like in supermoto. YRS is divided into four categories: suspension parts, hard parts, engine parts and engine services.

In the suspension department, YRS has rear-ride-height adjusters, fork and shock springs, rear kit Showa shocks - and you can even get the boys at YRS to help you set up the suspension and install the parts.

Supermoto racers who ride the DR-Z400SM will be interested to know that the hand-fabricated, TIG-welded "Twice Pipes" (that previously were made exclusively for Kevin Schwantz) are now for sale, along with a plethora of other parts and services.

At the top of a long list of hard parts are the YRS Case Savers, which are specially designed and reinforced to prevent costly crankcase damage in the event of a lowside crash. Three other items that are expected to be popular are the GSX-R1000 Swingarm Pivot Kits, which allow for a greater swingarm angle and provide more traction; the GSX-R1000 Rear Linkage Kit, which provides a more linear suspension geometry rising rate for better traction characteristics; and the Rear Fender-Eliminator Kit.

In addition to parts, complete race-engine services are also now available for select Suzuki models, particularly the GSX-R1000 machine. In short, a club racer who has the cash (or credit) can have the same engine that Mladin, Hayden and Young race. Yoshimura has an in-house Isotropic Superfinishing Process (ISF) department, where they can blueprint your engines and gear-sets with the same process that's done to the 240-horsepower Superbike race engines. The mirrorlike finish reduces friction on all reciprocating surfaces, thus reducing drag and increasing durability - and gives your bike that, as Yoshimura says, "magic" feeling. This is just one of long list of engine services available at the Race Shop.

Just how close to an AMA Superbike-spec motor can you buy?

"Pretty cotton-picking close," said Russell. "About as close as you could probably get... that's for sure. If you can find somebody that can twist the grip like some of those guys out there, then you can go put it up on the box. Obviously, you have to have a great rider to win races, but we can put a pretty good horse under that rider."

When asked about the cost of that complete motor, Russell said he would have that information in a few weeks'  time.

Currently, Yoshimura says that everything in its YRS catalog has been tested and homologated in AMA Superbike racing, and, additionally, they are in the process of the tedious task of researching and compiling a chart for all of the other racing organizations to see what YRS parts are or are not legal. As of today, most of the Race Shop items (about 80 percent) are already being sold through Parts Unlimited. Yoshimura is in the process of designing a dedicated website for the YRS line, however many products can be accessed by going to www.yoshimura-rd.com and clicking on the YRS logo on the bottom of the homepage, or by contacting your Parts Unlimited Dealer.

And on the subject of "street legal," Yoshimura created its version of a production bike with off-the-shelf components that's as close to a race bike as you can get, and still be street legal - the Suzuki GSX-R1000RR. It's a 2009 Suzuki GSX-R1000 with Yoshimura parts and graphics, along with extensive engine and suspension work. Yoshimura says the Gixxer RR has 173 horsepower, which is 19 more than the stock motor.

The following list of parts and services are for sale to the public, so the complete bike can be had by anyone with the cash and desire for it. And soon, we will see some of these Yoshimura Gixxer RRs on dealer floors ready to ride.
