Schultz won a record six NHRA Pro Stock Bike titles (1987-88, '91, '93-94, '96) and scored 45 career NHRA National event wins, making him the winningest motorcycle racer in the sanctioning body's history. He holds the all-time record for consecutive NHRA National wins (8), the incredible string coming in 1994. He ranks seventh on the all-time NHRA winners list.
Diagnosed with cancer last August, perhaps Schultz's most triumphant moment came when he returned to the saddle and scored an emotional 45th career NHRA win at the Matco Tools SuperNationals in Houston, Texas, in October, while undergoing chemotherapy treatment to fight the disease.
Schultz was also the first NHRA Winston Pro Stock Bike rider to turn an elapsed time quicker than 7.60 seconds and faster than 180 mph. He finished in the top-five of the NHRA Pro Stock Bike series points standings for 14 consecutive seasons.
Drag racing legend Terry Vance summed up Schultz, the man who took over from Vance as the dominant force in the sport, by saying, "He was the best guy who ever rode a Pro Stock motorcycle and I don't think anybody would argue with that. He was the most dedicated person to that sport that there has ever been. He was stout - he really was. I also thought that if anybody could beat this thing [cancer], it would be him. He was totally dedicated to his trade and it showed."
Schultz is survived by his wife, Meredith; son, Brian; and daughter Kim. Memorial services are scheduled as follows:
