Any hope that one of the other 450 riders might step up to challenge Ryan Dungey at the Red Bull Budds Creek (Md.) National took a major hit after timed qualifying Saturday morning. Dungey not only turned in the fastest lap of qualifying on his Red Bull KTM 450SX-F, but he was the only rider in the 450 class to break the two-minute mark and was nearly two seconds faster than second fastest qualifier Mike Alessi.

Dungey crashed in the first session and spent a lot of time in the mechanics area getting adjustments to his bike. He then went out and set his fast time of 1:58.838 in the second session. He said afterward that "Everything went smoothly in the second session and hopefully it would go that way the rest of the day."

Alessi topped the abbreviated first session (stopped a few minutes early due to a red flag) with a 2:00.640 on his MotoConcepts Suzuki. He was unable to improve his time in the second session.

Jeff Ward Racing Kawasaki's Josh Grant was third fastest with a time of 2:01.364, holding off a closely grouped segment of riders that included Broc Tickle, Justin Brayton and Jake Weimer, all in the 2:01s.

The 250 class was impressive, with three riders in the sub-two-minute range led by GEICO Honda's Justin Barcia with a 1:58.999. Eli Tomac and Ken Roczen finished qualifying second and third, the only riders in the 1:59 bracket.
