If you weren’t on a Yamaha, you weren’t in the hunt in Friday’s opening Superbike session at Road America. Cameron Beaubier closed out the session with a time of 2:13.450 that moved him past Monster Energy/Graves Yamaha teammate Josh Hayes. Hayes, who led most of the session, ended up second with a 2:13.766. Then there was a considerable gap back to third place Martin Cardenas, who clocked a 2:15.063 on the Yoshimura Suzuki. Roger Hayden and David Anthony rounded out the top five.

The motorcycle track record is 2:11.333, set by Hayes in 2012. Hayes is running a five-race winning streak coming into this year’s doubleheader.

Beaubier is hoping to become the first new Road America Superbike winner since in three years. In 2011 Blake Young was the last rider to win Road America for the first time.

Hayes and Larry Pegram are the only two former Road America winners in this year’s field. Only 15 riders rode in the first Superbike session.
