Both Hector Barbera and Andrea Dovizioso have been penalized under the new MotoGP World Championship penalty system for infractions in today’s Q1 qualifying session at the Circuit van Drenthe in Assen, Holland.
During the session Race Direction judged that Barbera impeded the progress of Dovizioso and his factory Ducati during his first lap out of the pits on new tires. Barbera rode on the racing line and didn’t allow Dovizioso to pass through two corners, according to the FIM. Thus Barbera was deemed to have ridden in an irresponsible manner, an infringement of Article 1.21.2 in the GP regulations. Barbera has been penalized one point in the new system.
Dovizioso, however, also was docked. After the incident with Barbera, Dovizioso was incensed and kicked at the Spaniard – an action deemed to be “prejudicial to the interests of the sport,” according to Article 18.104.22.168 of the GP regulations. Dovizioso was penalized one point for the infraction.
Neither Barbera nor Dovizioso made it through to Q2.
