Defending AMA National Hare & Hound Champion Destry Abbott finished the 2001 season with his sixth win yesterday at Lucerne Valley, California. Though he'd clinched the title earlier, the Kawasaki Team Green racer moved into first place after the second pit stop and easily won the race, put on by the 100's Motorcycle Club. Kellon Walch, on a Price Racing Kawasaki, earned runner-up honors in his first race on a 500, while Yamaha-mounted David Pearson claimed third overall, first 250. KTM 520 rider Paul Krause and Steve Hengeveld on a Honda XR650R rounded out the top five. GNCC/hare scrambles/ISDE rider Shane Watts made a surprise visit to the desert to see what it was like, but his race got sidetracked early when his chain broke.

Kariya spends way too much time in the desert, but we’re glad he does as he’s the man who gets us our coverage of all things sandy.
