Kawasaki Team Green’s Destry Abbott won his third AMA National Hare & Hound Championship after finishing second at the series final in Lucerne Valley yesterday.
Abbott and Montclair Yamaha’s Russ Pearson, the defending champion, battled back and forth in the early stages of the 90-mile race before Pearson settled into the lead, with Abbott holding his own in second. Late in the race, Abbott made a push to catch Pearson and got to within about 10 seconds of the leader before falling down twice and conceding the race to the Yamaha rider. Still, second place was good enough to win the championship, while Pearson ended up second in the series.
Third in the race went to Abbott’s teammate David Pearson, while fourth place went to Mike Childress.
David Pearson finished out the year third in points, followed by Brian Brown, who did not start the final race.
