Sammy Halbert’s loss was Jared Mees’ gain Saturday night in Lima.
Halbert dominated the proceedings all evening at the Allen County Fairgrounds Half-Mile, but when the engine blew on his bike halfway through the 25-lap national it was Mees, on his Rogers Racing/Las Vegas HD/Blue Springs Harley-Davidson XR750, who was there to take full advantage and go on to earn his third victory at Lima.
At Hagerstown Bryan Smith finally broke through and scored an historic win on a Kawasaki at a Half-Mile. It marks the first ever victory on an AMA Grand National Championship Half-Mile for Kawasaki. He's joined on the podium by second-place Jared Mees and Jake Showmaker who took third.(Larry Lawrence photo)

Bryan Smith did what most expected he would do and that was to blast through the field on his Villa-Esparza/Crosley Radio/Howerton Kawasaki and win by a solid margin of 2.559 seconds over Jake Shoemaker and Jake Johnson. (Larry Lawrence photo)

Kenny Coolbeth, Jr. called on his years of AMA Grand National racing experience to make a picture-perfect move through the last two turns on the final lap of the Springfield Mile. His around- the-outside pass on Bryan Smith shot Coolbeth out of the final turn with a rocket-like drive. Smith and Jared Mees meanwhile, each had small issues. Smith spun up the rear tire on his Kawasaki, while Mees picked a bad exit line and got squeezed. That gave Coolbeth just enough of a margin to put his Zanotti Racing. Moroney’s Harley-Davidson XR750 across the finish line just 0.010 seconds (or about a half a wheel length) ahead of Smith.
