Throwback Thursday: Assen GP Battle 1982

The Dutch fans loved it as you can tell by this photo – Franco Uncini going full bore on his Team Gallina Suzuki RG500 GP machine trying to stay ahead of a trio of world champs in Kawasaki’s Kork Ballington (8) and Yamaha mounted Kenny Roberts (3) and Barry Sheene (7). In this week’s Throwback we feature a great capture during the 1982 Dutch TT from the camera of Henny Ray Abrams. This race was run in two legs due to a torrential downpour and scored in motocross-style scoring. After everything was tallied, Uncini took the victory and with it the world championship lead over Roberts. Uncini would go on to surprise everyone by winning that year’s 500cc Grand Prix World Championship, winning five rounds along the way.
