He won by 2.328 seconds, from the equally remarkable rookie Toprak Razgatlioglu (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing). Razgatlioglu passed third-place finisher Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team) on the final lap to take a stunning first podium for Turkey and himself.
The race was indeed thrilling all round, with several changes of lead and hard passes aplenty. Leon Haslam (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) looked set for his own podium but fell at the Melbourne Hairpin early in the race.
Longtime leader Alex Lowes (Pata Yamaha Official WorldSBK) slowed to finish fourth, less than three seconds down on the win.
Chaz Davies (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) recovered from a tough start, and despite being pushed wide into turn one took fifth. He overhauled Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) in the process. Lorenzo Savadori (Milwaukee Aprilia) was an early contender but finished seventh.
Another heroic ride from Leon Camier (Red Bull Honda World Superbike Team) saw him eighth, one place ahead of the upwardly mobile Jordi Torres (MV Agusta Reparto Corse) and two up on the gradually slowing Loris Baz (GULF ALTHEA BMW Racing Team).
Jake Gagne (Red Bull Honda World Superbike Team) placed 13th, PJ Jacobsen (Triple M Honda) 16th.
In the championship points, Rea has 245, Davies 181, VDM 163, tied with fourth-ranked Sykes.

Behind the podium riders, Randy Krummenacher (BARDAHL Evan Bros. WorldSSP Yamaha) survived a near highside with six laps to go and although he lost one position, he reclaimed it to finish fourth.
2017 World Champion Lucas Mahias (GRT Yamaha Official WorldSSP Team) was fifth. He just finished behind Krummenacher on track, with Federico Caricasulo (GRT Yamaha Official WorldSSP Team) nearly two seconds adrift of his teammate.
Almost 14 seconds back, Ayrton Badovini (MV Agusta Reparto Corse by Vamag) was seventh. A good ride from NRT Yamaha rider Thomas Gradinger saw him take eighth place.
