2018 Salt Lake City 450cc Supercross Results: If we knew what was going to happen before the races even started, we wouldn’t have to run the races in the first place. In Salt Lake City, at the penultimate round of the 2018 Monster Energy/AMA Supercross Championship, Rockstar Energy Husqvarna’s Jason Anderson came in with a 34-point lead, which meant that a top-five in Utah would’ve delivered the championship one round early for Anderson no matter what happened with his only remaining title rival Marvin Musquin of the Red Bull KTM team.

Musquin did his part on the tricky and dusty track, passing early leader Blake Baggett (who just signed a new, three-year contract extension with his Rocky Mountain ATV/MC KTM team) and then controlling the rest of the 26-lap main event from the front to win his fourth main event of the year, and his second in a row. However, Anderson wasn’t nearly as lucky.

Anderson tangled with Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Eli Tomac going into the first turn, and Tomac’s left footpeg went through Anderson’s front spokes as Anderson hit the deck. He got up last, then lost two laps while his team changed his front tire in the mechanic’s area. Anderson ended up 17th, and almost got Monster Energy Yamaha’s Josh Hill at the finish for 16th, but couldn’t quite make it happen.
Anderson now leads Musquin by 14 points as they head into the Las Vegas finale, which means that even if Musquin wins, all Anderson needs is to finish in the top 10 to take his first-ever 450cc championship.
Behind Musquin at the finish came Tomac, who came through the pack to challenge Baggett for second around the halfway point, then fell, got back up in fourth, then went back after Baggett to take the second-place spot about six seconds behind Musquin. Baggett hung on for third, which was his fourth podium finish of the year.
