Throwback Thursday: 1975 Houston TT Heat Race
Larry Lawrence | March 29, 2018
In this week’s Throwback we roll the wheels back 43 years to the year 1975. Linda Ronstadt’s “You’re No Good” topped the music charts, gas was 50 cents a gallon and you could buy a Yamaha XS500 new off the showroom floor for $1700.
Back then the AMA Grand National Championship kicked off in late January, early February at the Houston Astrodome with a back-to-back weekend doubleheader, one night being a TT and the other a Short Track. This photo is from the 1975 TT event, a heat race starting in front of a packed house. Ron Powell won this Heat.
It’s easy to tell the riders in the photo since the scoreboard above has the riders’ names and numbers. That year Kenny Roberts won the TT on Friday night and Darryl Hurst took the win in Saturday night’s Short Track National.
