The Columbus (Ohio) Half-Mile AMA Grand National was better known as the Charity Newsies. The race, held on the half-mile dirt track at the Ohio State Fairgrounds, was one of the best attended nationals on the GNC calendar for most of its lifespan, regularly hosting more than 20,000. Annually it was the top fundraising event for the Charity Newsies, an organization that provided school clothes to poor children.
This photo from the 1969 race shows Chuck Palmgren (No. 38) leading over his brother Larry Palmgren (No. 5), Dick Mann (No. 2), Fred Nix (No. 3) and Darrell Dovel (No. 45).
Harley-Davidson factory rider Mert Lawwill won this day over Triumph riders Larry and Chuck Palmgren.
