Throwback Thursday: Donnie “Holeshot” Hansen Lives Up to His Nickname (1981)
Larry Lawrence | September 14, 2017
Honda factory rider Donnie “Holeshot” Hansen (21) lives up to his nickname as he nails the holeshot in one of the Heat races during the 1981 San Diego Supercross. Running with Hansen in the shot are Marty Smith (11) on a factory Suzuki, Kawasaki-mounted Jim Weinert (46), Craig Gormley (524) and Eric Eaton (308). Hansen won the Heat. He went on that night to finish on the podium (3rd) in the main. Marty Smith also made the main, but finished back in 17th. Broc Glover took the victory in the final that night.
This was in the days when the AMA Supercross Series would kick off in January and then string out all the way to the following November, with big breaks for the outdoor nationals in between.
