2017 MX GP of Lommel Results: After a couple weekends off, the MX GP World Championships resumed today in the sand of Lommel, Belgium, and the sand specialists came out to play. Red Bull KTM’s Jeffrey Herlings (MXGP) and Jorge Prado Garcia (MX2) took home the win, both of their second win on the season.

Herlings has been widely regarded for years as perhaps the greatest sand racer in the world, and at Lommel, the Dutchman didn’t disappoint. In the first moto, he passed his way by fellow Dutch KTM pilot Glenn Coldenhoff for the lead a few laps into the race and sped away with the win. Points leader Antonio Cairoli grabbed second about five laps later from Coldenhoff. Jeremy Van Norebeek (Monster Energy Yamaha) and Rockstar Energy Husqvarna’s Max Nagl rounded out the top five.
In moto two, Cairoli got the holeshot over Herlings, but Herlings got by on the opening lap. This time, Cairoli put in a charge to go after Herlings, but the Dutchman was just too good on the day. Cairoli eventually backed it down for second in front of Nagl’s teammate Max Anstie, Coldenhoff, and Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Clement Desalle.

In the MX2 class, points leader Pauls Jonass caught and passed his Red Bull KTM teammate Jorge Prado Garcia for the win in the first moto, with Suzuki’s Jeremy Seewer third, followed by Monster Energy Yamaha’s Benoit Paturel and KTM’s Julien Lieber.

Prado took the lead and sped away for the win, while Covington stayed second until late in the race, when he went down and ended the day with a DNF. Instead, Lieber ended up second over Covington’s teammate Thomas Kjer Olsen, Seewer, and then Jonass, who caught all the way up to fifth at the finish.
