2017 Lombardia MXGP Results – A new track mixed with heat and humidity the MXGP of Lombardia, in Ottobiano, Italy, June 25, made racing a challenge for the riders of the FIM MXGP Championship, but when things got tough the tough got going. GP veteran Antonio Cairoli and youngster Jeremy Seewer pulled through to claim the overall wins in the MXGP and MX2 divisions, respectively.

Cairoli, urged on by the home fans, won both MXGP motos to further expand his championship lead to 67 over Gautier Paulin, who was sixth overall on the day.
“I did my best, I gave 100 percent, everything I had, and we had a good race,” Cairoli said. “I’m happy to see all the people who came to support me and even after 14 years people still come to see me, it’s amazing. I am happy that I have a lot of fans and that motocross is growing in Italy because that is what we are working for. I had the ‘Sand King’ behind me and we tried to keep him there, maybe he was faster in some places than me, but we race 35 minutes and in the end I beat him.”
The “Sand King” that Cairoli was talking about was none other than his Red Bull KTM teammate Jeffrey Herlings, who went 2-2 on the day and gave Cairoli a race at times but suffered in the hot conditions. Herlings was fast but just couldn’t quite deal with the heat as well as the vet, Cairoli, who was the strongest at the end.
Finishing third on the day and visiting the MXGP podium for the first time of his career was Husqvarna’s Max Anstie. The former MX2 rider gutted it out in both motos, coming from behind both times to go 5-3 on the day.
“It’s awesome, it’s amazing, I’ve been dreaming of this for a long time,” Anstie said. “It’s different in MX2 and you know it’s tough, these guys are so fast. It’s awesome to get my first podium and have Tony there in Italy, the fans are crazy. It’s awesome to stand up there alongside him [Cairoli], I have a lot of respect for all of these guys!”
Yamaha’s Romain Febvre nearly got on the podium for the first time this year with fourth (4-6), while Husky’s Max Nagle rounded out the top five overall with 7-4 moto scores.

Suzuki’s Seewer, who struggled a bit in qualifying, let it rip in the first MX2 moto, passing his way into first place and running off with the moto win with 12 seconds to spare over Yamaha’s Benoit Paturel.
After a couple of small get-offs that sapped his energy, Seewer had to be satisfied with second place in the second moto, but it was good enough to give him the overall victory, the third of his career.
KTM’s Pauls Jonass, who won the second motos, suffered in the heat in the first moto after getting a bad start. He actually worked his way up to fourth place, but the energy it took to get there, cost him in the end. He faded back to sixth, but his 6-1 was good enough to give him second overall on the day and maintain his comfortable lead over Seewer in the championship. He still enjoys a 38-point advantage over the Suzuki rider.
Third overall was American Thomas Covington on the Rockstar Energy Husqvarna. A 4-3 was good enough to get him on the podium.
Fourth overall was Paturel (2-7), who fell in the first turn in the second moto, followed by The Netherlands’ Bas Vaessen (7-4). It was the Suzuki rider’s best result of his GP career. CN
