Dale Brown probably didn’t know it when he hit the shutter button to take this photo, but he captured what was a historic photo, featuring the last Supercross race for two of the sport’s top riders. What Brown captured on Kodak Tri-X film on July 11, 1981, in front of over 61,000 fans at the Los Angeles Coliseum, was Arlo Englund (No. 15) and Jim Weinert (No. 46) doing battle up front in one of the preliminary qualifying races for that night’s AMA Supercross finale. Englund was a journeyman motocross racer who was winding down his career and this was his final Supercross race. Weinert was already semi-retired by the time this photo was taken and did only a few select races, including this race, then called the Superbowl of Motocross. The two veteran riders were doing battle in a semi-final race. Englund made the main and finished 14th, while bike problems kept Weinert from making the final that night.
