Race for Glory was going to be the big movie breakthrough to put motorcycle racing into the mainstream, a Top Gun on two wheels if you will. This photo is of the villainous Samurai factory racer Klaus Kroetter on bike No. 18, played by Oliver Stritzel and the hero of the movie Cody Gifford on bike No. 51, played by Alex McArthur. Reports of the day say officials bent over backwards at Grand Prix events when the film crew was at an event, giving the producers unprecedented free reign at the GPs. The 1989 movie was the story of a young racer who hopes to take his mechanic buddy and their homemade bike to the big-time Grand Prix races. The underdog of underdogs, this team was up against the odds as they took on big-name race teams from all over the world in his effort to grab the cup of glory. The movie flopped and quickly faded. Today you’ll pay a pretty penny to find a VHS copy of the film.
